ADJECTIVES

Adjectives:
- modifies a noun or a pronoun by
describing, identifying or quantifying
words.
- usually go before the noun or the
pronoun which it modifies;
- Indicates what kind of, how many, whose
and which;
Types of adjectives:
1. Quantitative adjectives
2. Classifying adjectives
3. Attributive adjectives
4. Predicative adjectives
1. Qualitative adjectives:
- adjectives that identify a quality that
someone or something has;

- e.g.:
- hard, low, smooth, graceful, interesting
2. Gradable adjectives:
- gradable adjectives that describe
qualities that can be measured or
graded;
- the amount of quality can be indicated
by using:
1. A comparative or superlative
2. Sub modifiers such as very, rather,
really, and extremely

1. For one syllable adjective, add er or est;
e.g. ;
1. short shorter/ shortest
2. tall taller/ tallest
Rules of forming comparatives:
2.For adjective that ends in y, drop the y and
replaced it by-i, then add -er or est;
e.g. ;
1. pretty prettier/ prettiest
2. lazy lazier/ laziest
3.For one-syllable adjective that ends with a
single consonant, the consonant is doubled
and then add er or est;
e.g.:
1. slim slimmer/slimmest
2. big bigger/ biggest
4.Most two or more syllables form comparative
by using more than / the most
e.g.:
1. This painting is more splendid than
that.
3. Attributive adjectives:
- adjectives which appear directly beside
the noun, most commonly before,
because they attribute a quality to the
noun they modify.
- more than one adjective can modify the
same noun;
e.g.:
1.He washed the empty cup.

"Empty" is an attributive adjective, as it is
placed directly beside the noun "cup." It is
describing the cup.

2. The chatter made the room noisy.

This is an instance in which the attributive
adjective appears directly behind the noun.
"Noisy" is describing the "room."
4. Predicative adjectives:
- adjectives which appear after a linking verb
are called predicative, because they form
part of the predicate;
- they modify the subject of the sentence or
clause (a clause is a portion of a sentence
which contains a subject and a predicate);
e.g.:
1. The painting was colourful.

Noun: painting linking
verb: was
adjective: colourful (describing the noun
painting")

2. The wind remained strong.

noun: wind linking
verb: remained
adjective: strong (describing the noun "wind")
