Masthead is located in the top right third/corner of the page. It is a
red bow and has a large white Q inside it, this is almost the only red on the
cover. This has been used to make it stand out more against everything else.
They have used a serif font and used white to make it more noticeable against
the red. It has been branded as the main image slightly covers it. No slogan has
been used which suggests that as the masthead has been branded there was
no need to add a slogan.
Main Image - Is in the centre of the page and has cover lines
around it, however some cover lines cover some members of the band but not
their faces. It is a medium close up of the band and its covers the majority of the
page. There is only one person who is looking at the camera(direct address)
and the rest are looking around the room or at each other, this connotes that
they are of less importance than the one looking at the camera and the one
looking at the camera is more likely to be recognised, he is the main singer of
the band. They fit with the genre of the magazine as they are a popular music
group and the genre is popular music.
Skyline runs along the top of the page in a blue box, this is
almost the only blue used on the page, this makes it stand out. It is
advertising something that you would find/find information about in the
magazine. This is also a USP as it gives the audience another reason to
buy it. Two different fonts have been used and black and white have been
used to make the more important words stand out against the rest.
Barcode - has been placed in the bottom right hand corner this is
a common code and convention of magazines as it doesn't distract the
reader from the more important items on the cover. Its small and thin yet
still not placed at the bottom because it is needed to fill and dead space that
cant be filled by anything else. It is a legal requirement to have a barcode
but magazines make them small so that they are less noticeable.

Anchorage Text - is located underneath the main cover
line. It has sans serif font and has been written in white to make it stand out
against the black background. It has been used to give extra details about
the article on the main image. It covers the underneath of the main image
with is just the clothes of the front person, this is because the text is about
the main image and needs to be linked to it.
Price is located next to the barcode but still inside the barcode box.
This is because the magazine is quite expensive and they wouldn't want to
advertise it as the audience would lose interest. By placing it by the barcode
it is the last thing that the audience see and they would already want to buy
the magazine by this point. It is in small black and bold writing to show that
is different from the barcode.
Sell lines are located underneath the cover lines and next to the
large + sign. They have been used to advertise what else is in the
magazine without having to have a cover line about it this connotes that
they dont want to reveal too much information about the articles so the
audience are intrigued and want to read it. They are written in white and
grey and sans-serif fonts, they white are bold to exaggerate the difference
between the grey writing. The sell lines are all about popular music
groups/singers, this fits with the genre of the magazine as the genre is
popular music.
Puffs - are located in the top left corner/third, the top right
corner/third and the left middle third. The first is in a grey circle and is
referring to the skyline, it gives more information about what the skyline is
talking about. The writing is in black and bold with a serf font an there is
also a star underneath the writing to fill any dead space. The grey and black
contribute to each other and stand out. The second is also referring to the
skyline however this is in image of what the skyline is talking about, this
connotes that the audience may have seen it before but wouldn't recognise
or understand what the skyline is talking about without seeing an image of
it. It is larger than the first which connotes it is more important and also it
covers the dead space of the background of the main image. The third is
located above the main cover line and signals that this is an interview, this
connotes that this issue is special. It has been written in a sans-serif font
and the Q is in red and the rest is in black to show that the Q is the
masthead.

Cover lines - are located on the left and right hand side of the
cover, only the main cover line is on the left and the rest are on the right.
The main cover line is much bigger than the others to signal that it has the
most importance and links to the main image. White and grey have been
used for the cover lines which keeps with the colour scheme of white, grey
and red. A variety of fonts have been used (which is a code and convention
of magazines) however mostly sans-serif fronts have been used. The cover
lines on the right slightly cover part of the main image which connotes that
they are just as important.
Colour Scheme - is of grey, white and red. Red and white
are part of the colour scheme as they are the colours of the masthead and
as the masthead has been branded they must continue to use these
colours. Grey has been used because it is so different from white and red
and this way anything in grey will stand out against the red and white. A
dark background has been used to make the red and white text stand out
as well.
Layout - has the masthead in the top left corner and the main
image in the centre of the page, the cover lines are around the main image
and the skyline runs along the top of the page, also the barcode is in the
bottom corner. These are all codes and conventions of magazine covers.
The rule of thirds has also been applied which makes the page look ordered
and thus more appealing to the audience.
Niche Market for this issue is fans of the Arctic Monkeys as
they are on the cover. These fans would range from the ages of 13 to 26,
they would be both girls and boys but would be middle class. They would be
predominately white as the Arctic Monkeys themselves are white and
therefore people would find it easier to relate to them.

Mis-en-scene - denotes only the band and a grey
background this connotes that all the readers attention should be on the
band and nothing else which is why a grey background has been chosen.
Also the grey keeps with the colour scheme. The band have been
positioned with the main singer at the front as he is more likely to be
recognised than any of the rest, the singer is also looking directly at the
camera whereas the others are not this is because the main singer is more
likely to be the favourite of the band and therefore people would prefer him.
Target Audience - is women aged 16 to 30 who enjoy
popular music, they would be white and working class. Because mostly
women buy magazines and more women stereotypically listen to the radio
so are more likely to hear more popular songs. Also by looking at other Q
magazines mostly white people are on the cover which means the target
audience would be more able to relate to them also they would be working
class as people of higher classes tend to not buy magazines about popular
music.

Masthead - has reappeared on the contents page which is a
code and convention of magazines, it connotes that the audience should
get used to seeing the masthead so that it becomes branded. It is the same
font and colouring as the masthead on the front cover, this is so it can be
branded..
Heading - has been placed next to the masthead and in the
same red block to show that it is the heading. It has been written in black
sans serif font to match but contrast the masthead as the masthead is in
white. The text is slightly smaller than the masthead to show that the
masthead is more important. It is slightly covered by the main image on the
page which connotes that the main image is more important and that the
reader doesn't need to see all of the heading.

Date - is located above the heading and in the red block. It has been
used so the audience know that this is the most recent copy and that it has
the most up to date information. It has been written in white italics to make it
stand out from the rest of the red block. It follows the colour scheme of red,
white and black for the contents page.
Page Numbers are much larger than the text and in a
different colour, this is a code and convention of contents pages. The same
font has been used but the page numbers have been written in black and
are in bold to make them stand out. This has been done so that it is easier
for the reader to find anything as the page numbers are larger than the text.
Also by using black, they keep with the colour scheme as black is part of
that colour scheme.

Contents headings - are in red and are bigger than the text
explaining the article, this connotes that the writers want you to notice the
heading first as its the most important. Also to emphasise this the text has been
put in black whereas the heading is red, this also follows the colour scheme of
the page. They have been made larger and in put in a different colour so that
the audience find it easier to find anything because otherwise they would have
to look much harder.
Main image - links to the main image on the front cover however
instead of using the whole band like they did on the cover they have only used
the main singer, this connotes that they is more significant than the rest of the
band and people are more likely to recognise him than anyone else in the band.
It also overlaps the heading which connotes that it is more important than the
heading. It is a medium close up and he is dressed in smart casual clothes with
sunglasses and an old fashioned hair style, this links into the music that the
band makes and most people who listen to their music would dress like this.
This links with the genre as he is the singer of a popular music group and the
genre of the magazine is popular music,
Puffs - are located on the main image and next to the main image.
The first puff is a small black circle with a white outline stating that this was
the cover story, this is linking it to the front cover. This has been done to
make it easier for the niche market to find the article as they would've only
really bought the magazine for this article. Also its in a black circle to make
it stand out against the lighter background, the writing is grey so it stands
out against the black but doesnt distract the audience to much from the rest
of the page. The second is a yellow box stating that this is a special edition,
this makes the audience want to read the article more as its a special
edition. The yellow stands out against the light background and the black
writing stand out against the yellow. A sans-serif font has been used for the
text and it has been written in black to keep with the colour scheme,
however the yellow doesn't fit with the colour scheme which makes it stand
out more. This also acts as a USP because its special edition.
Other images have been used to make the page seem
more interesting. They have been placed below the main image and they
are smaller which connotes that they are less important. The images link to
the articles closest to them to show the audience who the article is about,
this connotes that they are not as famous and the audience need to be
reminded of who they are. Also it links with the genre as they are both
images of popular music groups and the genre is popular music.
Special Column has been added on the right hand side. It
discusses reviews from concerts of popular artists, this links in with the
genre. It has a black box around it and each band has been given a
different colour, this makes it stand out so the audience know that it is not
just other contents. This makes the magazine seem more special to the
audience and acts as a USP as they would want to buy it to read more.

Mis-en-scene - of the main image shows only him and a
white background, this is so all the audiences attention is on him. The
denotation of this is that he is wearing sunglasses, a blue shirt and is
looking away from the camera, this connotes that he isn't bothered about
having his photo taken and that he thinks he is very cool and famous and
stereotypically celebrities wear sunglasses. The mis-en-scene of the other
second image of the boy band shows them in a car park, this connotes that
they are not famous enough for a photo shoot but also that they are down
to earth, the denotation is that they are dressed in oversized scruffy outfits
that are quite old fashioned this connotes that their music is also like this,
its not as modern and it would sound like music from the 90s. The mis-en-
scene of the girl group shows them sitting in a park on benches in a
gazebo, this connotes that they are down to earth and enjoy nature. The
denotation of this image is they are dressed casually and are posing, this
connotes that they are used to having their photo taken but are unsure of
how to dress for a photo shoot so they dress how they normally would.
Layout has the heading and masthead and the date at the top
and the images mostly at the top with the other contents near the bottom.
Having a heading and masthead at the bottom is a convention of
magazines as its the first thing the target audience will see, also the images
are directly below this so they are the second thing to be noticed. The
contents at the bottom are arranged neatly in numerical order so its easier
for the target audience to follow. The rule of thirds seems to have been
attempted to make the page look neater but it doesnt seem like it was
followed completely to give the page a look of originality.

Main image - is a collage of the band, each member has their
own square and they have been arranged to make one big square. Each
photo is a medium close and all but one band member is looking at the
camera (direct address) this connotes that maybe he in less important or
his face isn't as attractive and the magazine would prefer him to not be
shown. The denoation of each picture shows them dressed smartly and
posing for the camera, this connotes that they are used to having their
photo taken whcih shows that they are a popular band which links in with
the genre.
Layout - has the main image on one side of the page and the
artcile on the other this is a code and convention of magazines as most
magazines make the main image take up the whole page. The rule of thirds
doesnt seem as if it has been used because the images are already
arranged neatly and the artcile has been split into 2 columns and an
opener.
Grab quote - is located in the centre of the collage, it states that
the main singer prefers writing about girls. This appeals to the niche market as
most of them are girls who would find the main singer attractive. It also acts as a
puff as its in its own box, it grabs the target audiences attention as the font is
different to anything else of the page. it is a code and convention of magazines
to use a grab quote as its one of the first things the target audience will notice
and once they read it they will want to read the rest of the article. A black sans-
serif front has been used for the quote and a red font has been used for the
name so that it is easy for the audience to differentiate between the quote and
whos saying it.
Information on images - is located on the collage of
images on the top right box. It states who is in each box, this would be for the
target audience and not the niche market as the niche market would know who
they are but the target audience may not. It has been written in small white text
so it stands out against the dark background, it has been mad small so the
audience dont get distracted by it and focus mainly on the article and the
images they have used.
Article - has been split into an opener at the top of the page and
the main article split into two columns underneath it. The article is very
detailed which connotes that whoever wrote it knows them very well which
appeals to the niche market as they would want to find out about them. It is
an interview and has very small black writing so that everything fits onto
one page. They have used the code and convention to have the first letter
of the first word much bigger than the rest, this makes the article seem
more interesting, also on the first letter they have used a red effect on the
background this is to reinforce the colour scheme of the magazine (red,
white and black) and to connote that this is from Q magazine, this is why
there is no masthead on the page because it has already been branded so
they use effects to remind the reader what magazine it is. The red effect
denotes a gas this connotes that it was used to make the article look more
alive and interesting. The opening paragraph at the top gives details about
the interview and it is in bigger writing to show that it is not the main article
but is still important.
Mis-en-scene - of the main image shows the band member
and a white background, this is because they want all the audiences
attention to be on the band member and not what it going on in the
background. The denotation of the main image is that each band member is
dressed smartly and all are posing but one isnt looking at the camera this
connotes that they are used to having photo shoots and know how to act to
them but one maybe feels uncomfortable or is of less importance than the
other members.
Colour Scheme - is red, white and black. This mostly
matches the colour scheme of the contents page and the front cover. The
red and white connote the masthead of the magazine and black is used for
text as it stands out against the white background.
