SOLAR ENERGY
INTRODUCTION
Solar energy is the ultimate source of energy
from millions of years and it is a renewable
energy.
This energy consists of radiant light and heat
energy from the sun.
Out of all energy emitted by sun only a small
fraction of energy is absorbed by the earth.
Using present solar techniques some of the
solar energy reaching the earth is utilized
for generating electricity etc.

HOW MUCH SOLAR ENERGY?

The surface receives about 47% of the total

solar energy that reaches the earth.Only this

amount is usable.

APPLICATION OF SOLAR ENERGY

Solar water heating
Solar space heating of buildings
Solar air-conditioning
Solar electricity-thermal
Solar electricity-photovoltaic
Solar drying
Solar cooking

Solar green house etc.

SOLAR WATER HEATING

A solar water heater unit comprises a flat

plate collector and an insulated storage

tank.
A collector consists of a blackened metal
plate absorber containing metal tubes and
is usually provided a glass cover.
The collector tubes is connected to a hot
water storage tank.
The collector absorbs solar radiations and
transfer to heat to the circulating water.
This system of water heating is commonly
used in hostels, hospitals, etc. as well as
domestic and industrial unit.

WATER HEATING ACTIVE SYSTEM

WATER HEATING IN BUILDING

SOLAR SPACE HEATING OF BUILDING

Solar space heating can be provided

passively through the architectural design

of the premises.
This involves only the orientation of the
building and providing large south-facing
windows.
More radical possibilities include the
provision of an entire wall of double-glazed
windows or a heavy dark coloured southfacing wall behind a layer of glass.
A layer of glass with room air circulating by
convention between the wall and the glass.

HEATING LIVING SPACES

SOLAR ELECTRICITY-THERMAL
Solar energy may be used to

heat a fluid ,which than

generates electricity through a
conventional heat system.
The system falls into two
categories(1) System in which individual
mirrors track the
continuously.
(2) System in which the mirrors
are fixed.
Continuous tracking system
use a large number of plane
or curved mirrors.

PARABOLIC DISHES AND TROUGHS

Because they work best under direct sun

light, parabolic dishes and troughs must be

steered throughout the day in the direction
of the sun.

SOLAR ELECTRICITY-PHOTOVOLTAIC
Photovoltaic cells are capable

of directly converting
sunlight into electricity.
A simple wafer of silicon
with wires attached to the
layers. Current is produced
based on types of silicon(n
and p types) used for the
layers.
Photovoltaic electricity
generation involves no
moving parts, no fluids and
no heat engine, therefore it
must be an attractive option
if it is technically and
economically.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

ADVANTAGES

(1)Solar energy is renewable.

(2)Solar energy is environmental friendly.
(3)Solar panel are extremely reliable.
(4)Very little maintenance is needed to keep
solar cells running.
DISADVANTAGES
(1) Costly
(2) Need of sunlight
(3) Inefficiency
(4) Large scale production is a time taken
process.
