Lesson Overview
We have gotten far better at creating our
own story problems involving division with
fractions (measurement division)!
3
Partitive Division.
Partitive division is when we know the whole is, and we know how many groups we are making,
but we need to find out how much is in each group. Whenever we divide a whole number by a
fraction, the answer will be larger than the whole number we started with. Here is our first
example:
Example #1 40
2
3
Step 1 Like step one from last time, determine if you want your problem to be measurement
or partitive. Today, we are focusing on partitive.
Example #1 40 3
We can start by drawing three equal-sized rectangles, because the denominator in is 3 (which
3
means we are using thirds).

What is 40 ? _________________
Meters
Feet
Pounds
Ounces
Dollars
Hours
For our example, we are going to use dollars.
Mr. Es Example Jack spent $40 of his allowance money. This was 3 of his allowance money. How
much allowance money did he start with?
2
Mr. Es Example #2 Ms. Fashusi ran 40 miles in a track race and is 3 of the way to the finish line.
How many miles long is the race?

Step #2 Draw a model (Hint: How many equal sized rectangles do you need? How do you
know?)
Divide 45 8
Step 2 Continued
Step #2 Draw a model (Hint: How many equal sized rectangles do you need? How do you
know?)
The 45 accounts for how many of these rectangles? How do you know?
So, 45 must be spread out evenly among _______ eights. What number belongs in each box?
Divide 45 8
Mr. Es Example Mr. E donated 45 pencils to Mr. Campbells class. This was 8 of the total number of
Mr. Es pencils. How many pencils does Mr. E have?
3
Mr. Es Example #2 Mr. E started a math tutoring program and 45 days have passed. If this is 8 of
the length of the program, how long is the program?
Homework Due
Tuesday/Wednesday
Create your own partitive division word problem using the two problems on the given sheet!
