Young Leaders
became exposed to public governance as first lady of her town in Tamparan, Lanao
del Sur where her husband served as local chief executive for many years. In 2007,
she ran for public office and won as their towns first lady mayor. Her first few days
as a then newly-elected mayor left her startled with multifarious drawbacks facing
her town. The town hall was not completed, the LGUs operations were left in
disarray, and the issues of poverty had not been properly addressed.
Without delay, Mayor Janjan immediately buckled down to work and with her team
analyzed the context of the current situation and narrowed down their actions
whereby the local governments interventions can be easily felt by the constituency.
The priority programs were implemented using the Bridging Leadership Approach, a
theory on leadership that she had learned from having attended AIMs Bridging
Leadership-Leading People Training for Mayors from 2008-2010. It espouses the
notion of a collective action to resolve crises.
envisioned a province of God-fearing and empowered people working together for
good governance, peace and harmony, economic prosperity and social wellness for
the betterment of life of the Maranao people. She believes in peoples participation,
in providing avenues for people to engage themselves in furthering governments
agenda for development. Most of all, she believes in the need to reform the very
institution she works through which she perceives as hindrance in making her
constituents move forward.
