DISK MANAGEMENT

(RAID)
Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disk

INTRODUCTION
Disk use for install windows and store data. You can
configure the disk and volume and create partitions to
allocate the space on the disk. You can create partitions
to install the OS and store data. You can also create a
fault tolerance for a disk by creating mirror and create a
Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disk.

Types of Disk
Hard Disk divided in two parts

1> Basic Disk

2> Dynamic Disk

BASIC DISK
The basic disk is the most common disk storage. The disk
space is divided into PARTITIONS. The first partitions on
basic disk is called the Master Boot Record (MBR). The
Master Boot Recorded of the drive stores the partition
such as partition size and partition location.
The basic disk contain both the Primary and Extended
partitions and Logical partitions are created in Extended
partitions.
A basic disk contain four primary partitions. Three primary
partitions and one extended partition for multiple Logical
partitions
Note :- Only one primary partition is marked as active as a
time.

DYNAMIC DISK
In a dynamic disk, the space is divided into VOLUMES.
Dynamic disk use for Fault Tolerance and spanned the
size of hard disk drive an exists volume.
Dynamic disk contain five Volume.
1. Simple Volume (Normal Volume)
2. Spanned Volume (Spanned the size of hard disk drive)
3. Striped Volume. (RAID 0)(Spanned the size of HD Drive)
4. Mirrored Volume. (RAID 1)(Use for Fault Tolerance )
5. RAID Volume. (RAID 5)(Fault Tolerance Spanned the
Size)
Note:- Dynamic disk are not supported on portable
computer or win XP Home Edition based computer

Simple Volume
A simple volume contains disk space from a single disk
and provides no fault tolerance. We can extended within
the same disk or on additional disk.

Spanned Volume
A spanned Volume is created from free disk space that is
linked together from multiple disk. a spanned volume
includes disk space from two or more disks (up to 32 disks).
Windows 2008 writes data to a spanned volume on the first
disk, completely filling the space, and continues in this
manner through each disk that you include in the spanned
volume. A spanned volume provides no fault tolerance. If
any disk in a spanned volume fails, the data in the entire
volume is lost.

A striped volume combines areas of free space from multiple hard disks, up to
32, into one logical volume. In a striped volume, Windows 2008 optimizes
performance by adding data to all disks at the same rate like 64 KB block . If a
disk in a striped volume fails, the data in the entire volume is lost.

Mirrored Volume
A mirrored volume is a fault
tolerance volume whose data is
duplicated on two physical disk.
All of the data on one volume is
copied to another disk to provide
data redundancy. If one disk fail
than the data can still be access
from the remaining disk. A
mirrored volume can not
extended.
Mirrored is also know as RAID -1.

RAID-5 Volume (Stripe Sets With Parity)

A RAID-5 volume is a fault-tolerant striped volume. Windows 2008
adds a parity-information stripe to each disk partition in the
volume. Windows 2008 uses the parity-information stripe to
reconstruct data when a physical disk fails. A minimum of three
hard disks is required in a RAID-5 volume. If a one physical disk
disk fail than we can recover data from remaining disk with the
help of parity. RAID-5 volumes are similar to stripe sets with parity.

Note:- Parity is a compressed backup of data in disk and it take

33% of space on all hard disk drive.

Convert Basic Disks to Dynamic Disks

You can not create Volume on Basic Disk So its required convert
basic to dynamic disk. you can convert a disk from basic Disk to
dynamic Dynamic at any time with no loss of data.

Note:- By default all disk is basic, you can convert basic to dynamic
which you have to install OS but you cant convert dynamic to
basic which you have to install OS after convert dynamic. If you
want to convert basic than remove all volume and than convert
dynamic to basic.

IMPORTANT
As a precaution, you should always have the data on a disk backed
up before you convert the storage type from basic to dynamic.
