MAT 120 Introduction to Functions

Week 2

Objectives Week 2
You should be able to:
Identify and manipulate transformations of functions graphically, in
table form, and symbolically.
Identify one-to-one functions and inverses of functions graphically
and in table form.
Identify even and odd functions graphically, in table form, and
symbolically.

Week 2 Activity 2

What is f(8)?

Where is f(x) = -1?

Shift the graph to the right by 2 units and

sketch the graph of the new function
(call it g(t)) on the grid provided
and make a new table of values.
What is the relationship between f(x) and g(t)?
If the point (-5, -2) were on the graph of
the original function, what point is on the
graph of the function shifted to the right by 3 units?

Week 2 Activity 2
Shift the original graph f(x) to the left by 3 units.

on the grid provided and make a new table of
values.

Week 2 Activity 2
Can you generalize?
If we shift a graph horizontally left or right, what is the relationship
between the original graph and the shifted graph symbolically? Why?
Explain what is happening.
If we shift a graph horizontally left or right, what happens to the
table?

Week 2 Activity 2
Now take the original graph f(x) and shrink
it horizontally by a factor of 2. Sketch the
graph of the new function (call it g(t)) on
the grid provided and make a new table of

If we stretch or shrink a graph horizontally, what is the relationship
between the original graph and the shifted graph symbolically? Why?

table?

with f(2x-3)?
What transformations are being applied to the function f(x)
with f(2(x-3))?

figure out the graph of = .5( 10)?

Vertical Transformations
Now take the original graph f(x), stretch the graph vertically by a
factor of 2 and then move it down 1 unit. Sketch the graph of the
new function (call it g(t)) on the grid provided and make a new table
of values

Two Special Transformations

Given a graph of f(x), how would f(-x) appear?
Given a graph of f(x), how would f(x) appear?
Given a graph of f(x), how would the absolute value of f(x) appear?

Write an equation for the graph of a function g(x), obtained by

shifting the graph of f (x) = x three units left, stretching the graph
vertically by a factor of two, reflecting that result over the x-axis, and
then translating the graph up four units.
