THE LAW
Gossiping and
judging (4:11)
Planning ahead
without God (4:13)
The transgressor
A mist (4:14)
Arrogance and
accountability
(4:15-17)
Do not speak evil of one another, brethren. He who speaks evil of a brother
and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you
judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. (James 4:11)
Do not speak evil of one another, brethren. He who speaks evil of a brother
and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you
judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. (James 4:11)
Come now, you who say, Today or tomorrow we will go to such and
such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit.
(James 4:13)
Instead you ought to say, If the Lord wills, we shall live and
do this or that. But now you boast in your arrogance. All such
boasting is evil. Therefore, to him who knows to do good and
does not do it, to him it is sin. (James 4:15-17)
Boasting and arrogance are used to describe selfsufficiency. That arrogance is evil. As Christians, we
must reject evil.
James also described sin. Sin is the transgression of
the law (1 John 3:4). But there is also a passive
sin; knowing good and not doing it.
The law of God condemns not only what we
have done but what we have not done. We will,
in the day of final accounts, find a register of
the sins of omission as well as the sins of
commission.
