Treatment

 By Eren Naim
Intentions
 I am investigating the people who stay in
education and those who decide to leave. I
am also going to look at the school leaving
age and find out why it being raised
 I am doing this so I can find out if leaving
school at 16 is a bad thing or not.
 I am taking both angle on this so it is not
biased.
Content of idea
 Topic is about Students leaving education and
the impact it is having on there lives both
positive and negative.
 My unique selling point is the fact that this has
not been done before, mainly the documentaries
you see are about adults talking about education
but mine is about students talking about it and
what their opinion is on it.
 I will be debating why staying in education is
good and why it is bad. I will do this by getting
real life people to talk about their experience,
Vox pops to get the publics views and experts to
get their opinion.
Structure and Running order
 Segment 1- intro on the topic (One Male presenter,
presenting outside a college/school)
 Segment 2- images and videos of students doing
exams and studying, with a voice over.
 Segment 3- Vox Pops asking ‘if leaving education is
a bad thing or not and what they would do or did.’
 Segment 4- interview with an expert (Mr Wilkinson
and Ed Balls or anyone who works with him.)
 Segment 5- interviews with a real life people who
left education and stayed in education

Explanation of Research
& Key Findings
 Focus Group:
 As part of Audience research, I set out to
find what my audience thinks about my
three chosen idea and what one they think
I should take on.
 It was qualitative research and it was also
primary research
Explanation of Research
& Key Findings
 Textual Analysis:
 I set out to find any documentaries out
there that are similar to mine in both topic
and structure wise.
 It was examining content
 Secondary Research and also qualitative
research
Explanation of Research
& Key Findings
 Questionnaire:
 I set out to find what my audience think and
want to see in my documentary to help it
appeal more.
 It is audience research
 It both qualitative and quantitative depending
on the questions you ask and also primary
research.
Explanation of Research
& Key Findings
 Facts and Figures:
 I set out to find some facts and figures about my
chosen topic.
 This was examining content
 This was more quantitative research because it
was more numerical and it was secondary
research.
Technical Viability
 For production I will be using equipments
like camera, tripod, microphone, Tape and
dolly.
 For Post production I will be using a Apple
I-Mac, Samsun USB Microphone, DVD
 I will need crew members like
Contributors, Presenter, Editor, Voice over
Artist, Music Editor and a Camera
Operator
Practical Viability
 The people that will appear in my documentary-
Presenter (Umayr), any random public member
on the day I will find them in centre London
(Russell Square). Students from school, teachers
(Mr Wilkinson) expert (Ed Balls) or anyone who
works with/for him.
 It will be shot in a school, outside a school, and in
centre London which are my main locations
 You don’t need access to these location and I
wouldn’t need any props or costumes.
 I will try and film a footage of students doing a
exam but if I can’t do that and its to difficult then I
will try and use one that has already been filmed
from someone else. (from YouTube)
Legal & Regulatory
Considerations
 The guidelines of BBC editorial guidelines has effected
my piece because its got to be truthful and accurate so I
cant lie about anything or make anything up.
 The guidelines of Media Law has also got an effect on my
piece because I can not copyright which means
everything I do must be genuine and my own work.
 The guidelines of OfCOM’s Regulations has had a effect
on my documentary in a positive way because I cant
include anything offensive which would mean my
audience wouldn’t get offended by anything I might have
said
Commercial Viability
 The Market- There are not really any documentary that
are similar to mine, there could be some that come on
occasionally on a BBC channel or even a programme
called cash in hand. There are programmes like
Eastenders which compete for the same audience
 What makes my documentary unique is the fact that this
has not been done before, mainly the documentaries you
see are about adults talking about education but mine is
about students talking about it and what their opinion is
on it.
 Budget- I will need to buy travel cards for when I go on
trains to a different location, I will need money for food,
and I may need credit on my phone to make any phones
calls. This will all be at a price of £10
Commercial Viability
BBC’s Ethos:
 Inform- I am informing the audience watching the
possibilities of what could happen when you stay or
leave school.
 Educate- I educate them because I am telling them facts
that they never knew.
 Entertaining- I entertain them by making it appeal to my
audience and by not making it too serious
 I would broadcast my show at 7pm on a Thursday
because then I am competing with the One Show and its
on before Eastenders.
Questions for my Audience
 What’s your opinion on the school leaving
age? (SLA is 16 going to be raised to 18)

 Was there anything you liked or disliked?

 Do you know anyone who succeeded or

any failures?
