What is Battery Electric Vehicle

(BEV)??
A

battery electric vehicle (BEV) is a type

of electric vehicle (EV) that uses chemical
energy stored in rechargeable battery
pack. BEVs use electric motor and motor
controllers instead of internal combustion
engines (ICEs) for propulsion.

Theory of running a BEV

Through the rechargeable battery packs power

supply, the electric motor will change the
electricity into the kinetic energy giving impetus to
the vehicle.

Different to the normal motor, the electric motor

also will be the regenerative braking energy
converter system () when
the vehicle is braking. It will recycle its brakings
kinetic energy to be a new electricity saving in the
battery again.

Also, it increases a new function that when the

electric vehicle is stopped, its electric motor is not
worked completely which means it wont waste
any electricity during the waiting time.

Advantages---------------(1)

Recycle a larger part of kinetic energy to not

waste these power. For example: The
regenerative braking energy converter
system
Reduce about 5 TON per car in total carbonemission which comparing with a normal
car.(Data is coming from Feedline:LowCVP report on carbon footprint
of EV and HEV )

Reduce the fuel cost. Since under a high

energy efficiency, the actual fuel using is
lower than a normal car using. For example: A
driver use BEV to run about 40-60 km per day,
its electricity bill will need $11. It compare with
a normal car saving about 80% (calculate from
HKCLP 2014 Average net electric price)

Advantages---------------(2)
Reduce

the noise pollution. Since the

electric motor is no chemical burning
process, it produce its shocking and
noises is softer than the traditional motor.
And wont affect the nearly residents.

Disadvantages-----------(1)

Short battery life. A electric battery just can

be charged about 200-300 times. It is not
enough for the drivers using.
Higher cost of BEV. Comparing with having
same functions normal vehicle, the BEV
prices are higher about 2-3 times which cost
mainly come from the battery(33%). So when
the battery is easy to be broken, the total cost
will be very large. It gives a economic burden
for the drivers.
Long charging time. Since charging fuel to a
normal car just need 1-2 min. But the BEV will
need about 15 min for charging. It is not
convenient for the drivers using.

Disadvantages-----------(2)
Unstable

driving distance. Since it is

considering the weight of burden, road
surface, it becomes not sure to provide a
clear data that the distance of BEV can run.
Range anxiety(). It means when the
remaining battery capacity is low, the driver
does not know clearly about the remaining
power how far can go.

Really can reduce the carbon emission directly in

this high population density city.
Improve Hong Kong living environment, especially
noise pollution and air pollution, to protect Hong
Kongs public health
Decrease the burden of vehicle fuel cost to attract
more drivers to use BEV.
Lower affecting come from the problem of
unstable driving distance. Since Hong Kong is a
small-area city, it no need to worry about that the
remaining electricity power must support the BEV
to go to the nearly Gas station.

Longer

charging time become the main

problem to make the driver not want to
use. 15min per charge is a long time for
wasting under this fast-foot style, every
thing needs a high efficiency to finish it.
Double or triple prices and high changing
new batterys cost is another reason for
the drivers difficult to buy it.

Conclusion

In my opinion, if the government want to promote

BEV, they should focus on the discount ways to
attract the driver. It is because the repairing
cost(change battery) is very expensive for some
normal users. Also, its fuel cost is already cheaper
than before. The prices attraction is a best way to
find the drivers supporting.
It is matching the propose of sustainable
development that BEV provides a larger room of
improvement. For example: Change the Hong
Kong energy mix which higher % in renewable
energy & other alternative energy. So that Hong
Kong air quality will be better again and good for
public health. Peoples working efficiency rise up,
economic development must be progressed faster
