BIOTECHNOLOGY
What is biotechnology?
It can be defined as the use of biotechnical methods
to modify the genetic material of living cells so they will
produce new substances or perform new functions.
It also refers to genetic engineering and genetic
modification, or more generally to moving or transferring
genetic material between sources.
It is the use of living organisms to make a product or
run a process.
Examples:
* Transgenic Escheria coli (E. coli) used to
produced human insulin which does not contain allergic
reactions not unlike animal insulin.
Engineered microorganisms produce proteins used in
food manufacturing.
* Cheese manufacturers now use chymotrypsin
(chymosin enzyme) made by genetically modified bacteria
(before made w/ an extract of calf stomachs).
* GMO made enzymes that improve the taste and
clarity of beer and fruit juice, slow bread staling & modified
fats.
Industrial Biotechnology
Industrial biotechnology applies the techniques of
modern molecular biology to improve the efficiency and
reduce the environmental impacts of industrial
processes like textile, paper and pulp, and chemical
manufacturing.
For example, industrial biotechnology companies
develop biocatalysts, such as enzymes, to synthesize
chemicals. Enzymes are proteins produced by all
organisms. Using biotechnology, the desired enzyme can
be manufactured in commercial quantities.
