1. AFRIKAANS

also known as the Cape Dutch


the name Afrikaans menas African in Dutch
it was considered a Dutch dialect until the early
20th century

Dialects:
Cape Afrikaans
Orange River Afrikaans
East Cape Afrikaans

2. DANISH
It is spoken by 5.4 million people in Denmark.
also spoken in Canada, Germany, Greenland,
Iceland, Norway, Sweden, United Arab Emirates,
USA.
The total number of speakers of Danish worldwide
is estimated at around 5.6 million

Two major dialect groups:


Bornholmsk (Eastern Danish)
Snderjysk (Southern Jutlandic)

Standard Danish is based


on Eastern Danish spoken
in and around the capital
of Copenhagen.

3. DUTCH
spoken by 16.4 million people in the Netherlands
(Holland) and in the northern half of Belgium
The worldwide population of Dutch speakers is 23
million people.

4. YIDDISH
The name yidish in Yiddish means Jewish
Yiddish has sometimes been described as a dialect
of German, probably because both languages
developed from Middle High German

It

is spoken by an estimated 3 million


people in a number of countries of the
Jewish diaspora.
There are 215, 000 speakers of Yiddish in
Israel.

Two main branches :


Eastern Yiddish
Western Yiddish

5. SWEDISH
It is spoken in Sweden by 8 million people.
It is also spoken in Canada, Estonia,
Finland, Norway, United Arab Emirates,
and USA.
Swedish is closely related
to Norwegian and Danish.

Dialects
Swedish is generally divided into three main
dialect areas:
Northern

Swedish (Norrland)
Eastern Swedish (Finland Swedish,
Estonian Swedish)
Svea, Gutniska (Gutamal, Gotlandic,
Gutnic)

6.NORWEGIAN

It is the official language of Norway, where it is


spoken by 4.6 million people.

It is also spoken in the U.S., Canada, and Sweden.


It is estimated that there are around 5 million
speakers of Norwegian worldwide.

Norwegian has two standardized official spoken


and written varieties.
The two Norwegian languages are used in public
administration, religious services, and in the media:
Bokml (book-language)
Nynorsk (New-Norwegian)

Norwegian has many local dialects which are usually


divided into four major groups:

North (Nordnorsk)
Central (Trndsk)
West (Vestnorsk)
East (stnorsk)

7.ICELANDIC

.It is spoken mostly in Iceland

Icelandic is the de facto national language


of Iceland where it is spoken by all of Icelands
319,000 citizens.
Icelandic does not have any notable
dialect differences due to the fact
that it is spoken on one isolated
island.

8.ENGLISH

English has 335 million native speakers, which


makes it the third largest native language in the
world after Chinese (874 million) and Spanish (406
million).

English is one of the official languages of the United


Nations (UN), North Atlantic Treaty Organization
(NATO), Organization of American States
(OAS), and the European Union (EU).

English is now the most widely studied second


language in the world because a working knowledge
of English is required in many fields and occupations
as well as for international communication.

More Nobel prizes in literature were awarded to


writers using English than those using any other
language.
