Creativity

 Creativity is a mental process involving the


generation of new ideas or concepts, or new
associations between existing ideas or concepts.
 The products of creative thinking usually have
both originality and appropriateness.
 In investigating an existing object conceived of
before and in seeing or performing some thing in
a manner different from what was thought
possible or normal previously.
Types of Creativity

There are two types of Creativity:


 Individual Creativity
 Organizational Creativity
Individual Creativity:
 Generally speaking the creative person is
curious, sensitive, venture some, independent,
persistent, complex, imaginative, visionary and
moody yet realistic.
 He/She is propel by the desire to grow, innovate,
pioneer, change the status quo and is not
hampered by various sorts of fears and blocks
that act as inner censors of bold ideas.
There are many distinctive creativity related
abilities

 Problem sensitivity: Childs ability to ask naïve but fruitful


questions.
 The ability restructure problems in interesting ways.
 The ability to ideate copiously, eg., Thinking of using
things differently.
 Flexibility
 Guessing the causes of problems.
 Elaborative ability: Ability to take an idea or thing and
bend and stretch it in interesting ways.
 Originality
The following are dimensions or
essentials of Creativity:

 Fluency
 Flexibility
 Originality
 Elaboration
Organizational Creativity

Managers and executives in most companies are


aware that their creative potential greatly
exceeds their creative performance.
The problem is that they do not know what to do
about it.
Most creative acts, as they now occur in
companies or not planned for and come from
where they are least expected. Eg., Japan
railways east, and Emergence of Oshimizu.
It has been suggested that three components are
needed to enhance creativity in business:

 Expertise (technical, procedural and intellectual


knowledge).
 Creative thinking skills (flexibility and imaginative
approach to problems).
 Motivation (especially intrinsic motivation)

Some of the Organizations have suggested these


essential elements that companies can use to turn
their creativity from a hit or miss propositions into
some thing consistent that they can count on, they
are:

 Alignment
 Self initiated activity
 Unofficial activity
 Serendipity (keenness of insight)
 Diverse Stimuli
 Within company communication
