History of Medical Care in

Saltadere
Clinic first established by Belgian missionaries in 1950s
In early 2000s, the clinic moved to the rectory compound where
Gertrude, a medical lab technician, served as a nurse
In the last 2 years, the Haitian government would no longer
allow her to act as a nurse since she is not licensed. Location
was also felt to be inappropriate
Since then, Fr. Ilric hires doctors and nurses to come and provide
care periodically in the old dispensary building

Midwives for Haiti comes monthly for pre and post natal care

Healthcare in Saltadre
Today
Healthcare is #1 issue for Fr. Ilric in his recent visit calling it
an emergency need
Recent Cholera outbreak underscores this need (300
affected, 7 died)
Area is about the population of the City of Charlottesville or
Culpeper County but spread out in rural area(40,000-50,000)

No current adequate medical facility

No current doctors in the community

Midwives for Haiti declared the Saltadere area one of the

most underserved areas in Haiti for midwifery care
Complications from pregnancy and childbirth are one of the
leading causes of death in women ages 15-19
Closest medical facility is about a 45-60 minute drive, 2-3
hour walk
Nearest hospital is about 1 hours by car, 6-8 hour walk
Only 3 people own cars in Saltadere, one of them is Fr. Ilric
