WHAT IS VISION 2020?


Vision 2020 is about Malaysia becoming a fully

developed country by achieving high per capita


income.
It was launched in 1990 by the Prime Minister, Tun

Dr. Mahathir Mohamed.


It is a 30 year plan development

VISION 2020

The main goals of Vision 2020 is to modernize and

develop our country based on its own model and


develop that nation economically, politically,

socially, spiritually, psychologically and culturally.

To achieve these goals, 9 challenges have been listed

9 Strategic Challenges
1.

Establishing a united Malaysian nation with a sense of common


and shared destiny.

2.

Creating a psychologically liberated, secured and developed


Malaysian society.

3.

Fostering and developing a mature democratic society that can be


a model for many developing countries.

4.

Establishing a fully moral and ethical society whose citizens are


strong in religious and spiritual values.

5.

Establishing a mature, liberal and tolerant society in which


Malaysian of all colours and creeds are free to practise and
profess their customs, cultures, religions and beliefs.

6.

Establishing a scientific and progressive society, that is innovative


and forward looking.

7.

Establishing a fully caring society and a caring culture.

8.

Ensuring an economically just society where there is a fair and


equitable distribution of wealth.

9.

Establishing a prosperous society with an economy that is fully


competitive, dynamic, robust and resilient.

Strategy In Achieving Vision 2020


NDP

Maintaining the basic strategy of NEP that is:


The concept of National

Unity but

also to enhance the balance

development of social infrastructure, agricultural and industrial bases.


To reduce poverty regardless of race
To achieve economic growth 7%-8% per annum
NVP

To eradicate / eliminate the poverty regardless of race


To strengthens the national unity

To pursue a balance development


The strategies of Vision 2020

NEM

To provide all Malaysian equal chance to participate in economic


growth
To raise the income of the bottom 40% of household that is from

RM 1440 per month in 2009 to RM 2300 per month in 2015


To provide equitable access of basic infrastructure and amenities to all
citizens regardless of location
To support disadvantage groups by regarded as valued participants in
society

Achievement Towards Vision 2020


NDP

Increase of GDP rate form RM 79.1 billion in 1990 to RM 209.3 billion


in 2000
Decreasing in poverty in rural and urban area from 17.1 % in 1990 10

7.5% in 2000
Fairer distribution of income where the monthly gross household
income for Bumiputera increase by 5.5 % while Chinese and Indian are
4.6% and 6% respectively from 1990 t0 2000
Improved the quality of life, eg: life expectancy of males and females,
infant motarlity rate, doctor-to-population ratio, literacy and water and
electric supply.

Structural shift from self-employment in low productivity agricultural


job to higher paying formal wage-earning job
Malay woman receiving education to enables them working in modern

sector
More rural and urban unskilled Malays received higher education
