Distance
learning

What is Distance
Learning??
Any educational or learning process
or system in which the teacher and
instructor are separated
geographically or in time from his
or her students; or in which
students are separated from other
students or educational resources.

- One of the most comprehensive definitions is

by Keegan (1996:44) in which six basic defining
elements of Distance Learning are suggested. He
observes that DL is characterized by:
the separation of learner and tutor as
opposed to face-to-face teaching.
the influence of an educational organization
which distinguishes distance education from
private study.
the use of technical media, e.g. print, audio,
or website to unite tutor and learner.

the provision of a two-way

communication so that the student may
engage in dialogue with the tutor.
the possibility of occasional meetings
for purposes of interaction.
the self-directed nature of the
learners involvement.

WHAT IS E-LEARNING ?
E-Learning is electronic learning to enable
people learn anytime and anywhere.
using a computer to deliver part, or all of a
course whether it's in a school, part of your
mandatory business training or a full distance
learning course s.
it includes all kind s of the utilization of ICT in
instruction.

Types of E-Learning

SYNCHRONOUS
E-LEARNING

ASYNCHRONOUS
E-LEARNING

1. Synchronous
means at the same time, involves interaction of
participants with an instructor via the Web in real
time. For example VCRs or Virtual class rooms
Continuous monitoring and correction is possible
Possibilities of global connectivity and
collaboration opportunities among learners.
Ability to personalise the training for each
learner.

2. Asynchronous
means not at the same time, allows the participants
to complete the WBT (Web-based training) at their
own pace, without live interaction with the instructor.
These include computer based training,(CBTs) modules
on CD-Roms, and others
Available just in time for instant learning and
reference.
Flexibility of access from anywhere at anytime.
Ability to simultaneously reach an unlimited number of
employees.
Uniformity of content and one time cost of production.

THE EFFECT OF TECHNOLOGY ON

STUDENTS AND CLASSROOM
(POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE)

POSITIVE EFFECT OF TECHNOLOGY ON STUDENTS AND CLASSROOM

NEGATIVE EFFECT OF TECHNOLOGY ON STUDENTS AND CLASSROOM

Distract the students in learning

Using technology in the classroom has been a
issue that teachers have to deal with. Student
use technology to avoid boredom from what is
being done in class. They use their cell phone to
text one another, surf the internet, check their
Facebook or Myspace,

In a NEA online article a fourth grade teacher in

Arizona expressed this, Believes cell phones
should be absolutely banned from school. She
also said, Cell phones are nothing but a
disruption to class instruction.
