Introduction

Introduction
Tesla Motors, Inc. is an American company that
designs, manufactures, and sells Electric
Vehicles.
Get attention with its famous and fully electric
sports car Tesla Roadster.

Continued
Award winning Tesla Model S , a fully electric luxury sedan, and
its next two vehicles are the Models X and 3.

Specialty of Tesla Technology

60 kWh microprocessor controlled, lithium-ion
battery
Three phase, four pole AC induction motor with
copper rotor.
Drive inverter with variable frequency drive and
regenerative braking system.
Tesla starts with thousands of best-in-class
Lithium-ion cells and assembles them into a
liquid-cooled battery pack, wrapped in a strong
metal enclosure. The battery is optimized for
performance, safety, longevity, and cost.

Super charging capability

The Supercharger is a proprietary DC rapidcharging station that provides almost 100 kW of
power, giving 85 kWh vehicles an additional
150 mi (240 km) of range in about 30 minutes.

Innovative Battery Swapping

Tesla designed its Model S to allow fast battery
swapping, which also facilitates vehicle assembly.
In June 2013, Tesla announced their goal to
deploy a battery swapping station in Tesla
stations. At a demonstration Tesla showed a
battery swap operation taking just over 90
seconds, about half the time it takes to refill an
empty gas tank.

Tesla Innovations in EVs

Battery life optimization

Number of factors limit the battery service life
1. Number of charging cycle that battery subjected
to.
2. Rate of charging (slow Vs fast charge).
3. Level of charging i.e. 75% of full charge ,full
charge or over charge.
4. Level of discharging before charge i.e.
completely depleted ,still charge or full charge.
5. Internal temperature during use and nonuse as
well as mechanical and chemical instability.

1. Rigid cell separation from

avoiding thermal runaway
Lithium ion battery have problem of
thermal runaway hence the spacer
assembly maintain the position of cells
within battery ensuring the cooling system
works well all the time.

Patent # US2013078494A1

2. Vehicle battery pack thermal

barrier
Integrated thermally mounted assembly for
battery pack located between floor panel
and driving surface that provide noise
isolation ,thermal isolation and vibration
damping as well as hard enough in case of
accidents.

Patent # US2013153317A1

3. Battery humidity control

Control the humidity of the battery pack using selective
removal of water vapour by using desiccant chamber .
Patent # US8247097B1

4. Cell failure indication within

Battery pack
Monitor the electrical isolation
resistance with in the battery in order
to check the cell failure from thermal
runaway.
Patent # US2013049971A1

5.Battery pressure monitor for

thermal events
Use sensors within battery pack to
check the pressure within the cells
due to thermal runaway and check
the data results with preset values.

Patent # US2013260192A1

6. Set DC charge current

Conventional on board charger in EV are
usually charged via battery charger
request to use DC charge current from the
outlet and cant use the full AC wall power
that is the drawback in charging .

Patent #
US2012091953A1

7. Range Extender Option

Use an extra fuel engine to charge
the battery if fall below level of
particular charging percentage.
Patent # US2013066506A1

8. Control
system

Dual

motor

drive

Check the speed of the back wheels

using a sensors and adjust the torque
provided by each motor in order to
minimize wheel slip.

Patent # US2013241445A1

9. Fast charge mode for extended trip

Method implemented in the vehicle
for early identification of fast charge
station and prepare battery cells for
fast charge.

Patent # WO2014070654A1

Tesla Model S

Exquisite Innovative Interior

Safety Standard
On August 19, 2013, based on
NHTSA safety ratings, a Tesla press
release claimed that the Model S had
achieved the best safety rating of any
car ever tested.

Future Of EVs

Model X ..a Future car

Generation 3 . EVs for Mass Market
