Types of Research
A research can be classified as follows

Exploratory Research
Descriptive Research
Analytical research

Types of Research
Quantitative Research
Qualitative Research
Conceptual Research
Modeling Research
Copyright Amity University

Exploratory Research

Exploratory research is most

commonly unstructured,
informal research that is
undertaken to gain
background information about
the general nature of the
research problem.

Exploratory Research

It is usually conducted when the

researcher does not know much
about the problem and needs
additional information or desires
new or more recent information.

Copyright Amity University

Exploratory Research
A research which analyzes the data and
explores the possibility of obtaining as
many as relationships as possible
between different variables without
knowing their end applications.
Example:- Literature Survey, Experience
survey

Descriptive Research
This type of research carried out specific
objectives and hence it results in definite
conclusion. Descriptive research is undertaken to
provide answers to questions of who, what, where,
when,
and how but not why.
Cont

Descriptive Research

Example: What is the pass rate for

particular courses?
What is the dropout rate on
particular degree programmes?
Copyright Amity University

Analytical Research
This type of research is used
where information is already
available, and analyze these to
make a critical evaluation of the
material.
Ex:- PERT/CPM methods

Quantitative Research
Answer questions about data that
can be measured in order to
explain and predict or phenomena
that can be expressed in terms of
quantity.

Copyright Amity University

Quantitative
Research
Answer questions about nature of
phenomena in order to describe
phenomena and understand it from
the participants point of view.

Conceptual Research

This type of research is related to

some ideas or theory and generally
used by philosopher.

Copyright Amity University

Modeling Research
This type of research is related to
business situation where business
situation is formulated into
different types of model.
Example:Mathematical model, simulation models

Research Process

The Research Process can be

simple or complex, quick or
lengthy, depending on the
complexity of information needs.

Research Involves
following steps:
