Introduction What are Silicones?

By analogy with ketones, the name silicone was given in 1901 by Kipping
to describe new compounds with the generic formula R2SiO.
The name silicone was adapted by the industry and most of the time
refers to polymers where R = Me or -CH3

(Poly-Di-Methyl-Siloxanes = PDMS)
The methyls along the chain can be substituted by many other groups, e.g.
phenyl, vinyl or trifluoropropyl, introducing specific properties.
Silicone Adhesives/Sealants from Dow Corning

Silicone Adhesives/Sealants from Dow Corning are designed to be
the answer to your sealant/adhesive problem.
These products are versatile, durable and have exceptional
performance characteristics.

for endless applications in the Industrial Assembly and

Wide Service Temperature Range

Dow Corning Adhesives/Sealants offer users exceptional thermal
stability over a wide service temperature range.
Fully cured, these all-purpose materials can be used for extended
periods at temperatures ranging from 85 to 450F (-65 to 232C)
and for shorter periods as high as 600F (315C).
Glass transition temperatures are very low, e.g. 196F (-127C)
compared to 100F (-73C) for isobutylene, the analogue
hydrocarbon. Therefore, silicone sealants/adhesives remain flexible
at deep temperatures.
Extremely Weather Resistant

Dow Corning Silicone Adhesives/Sealants are virtually unaffected
by weather including rain, sleet, snow, ultraviolet (UV)
radiation, ozone and temperature extremes.
These materials will highly resist against hardening, cracking,
crumbling, drying out or becoming brittle with aging.
Good Dielectric Properties

When used for electrical/electronic applications, Dow Corning
Silicone Adhesives/Sealants exhibit good dielectric properties over
wide thermal cycling conditions.
Offering outstanding water and moisture protection, good
insulation properties, and a non corrosive cure mechanism, they
effectively protect, seal and insulate a variety of corrosionsensitive components and equipment.
Good Bond Strength

Dow Corning Silicone Adhesives/Sealants are specially designed to
provide good adhesion and bond strength to a variety of surfaces.
The materials have been developed to achieve excellent adhesion
to glass, wood, silicone resin, vulcanized silicone rubber, natural
and synthetic fiber, painted surfaces and many plastics and
metals.
Low Flammability
In fire conditions, Silicone Adhesives/Sealants are reluctant to
burn and, in fact, some grades are exceptionally flame retardant.
Even those types which eventually ignite have a low rate of heat
release and low by-product toxicity.
Many products comply with UL-94 flammability standards such
as UL-94 HB or UL-94 V-0.
Chemically Stable
Featuring good chemical stability, Dow Corning Silicone
Adhesive/Sealants are ideal for use in applications exposed to
harsh environments.
Being highly resistant to chemical attack, these materials
withstand long-term exposure to most organic and inorganic
chemicals, lubricants, and some solvents.
Environmentally Friendly
Dow Corning is striving to reduce the environmental footprint of
its operations, working largely from the framework of the
Responsible Care Pollution Prevention Code.
As a consequence, Dow Corning Adhesives/Sealants do not require
solvents, CFCs or other environmentally harmful materials for
processing.

When compared to traditional organic materials, Dow Corning
products offer excellent stability in a variety of harsh
environments.
Dow Corning products resists many chemicals such as hot water,
antifreeze, oil, acids.
