World Population Growth

According to United Nations

Population Division (2009), the world

population will increase from about
6.9 billion to 9.2 billion by 2050 or an
addition of about 2.3 billion more
people to feed.

Growth in Urban
Population
The percentage of urban population

will likewise increase from 50.46% in

2010 to 68.70% in 2050. It is
expected that world population will
continue to increase. Currently, the
rate of growth per year is about 80
million.

Limited Land for

Agriculture
This is a major concern because the

land area of the Earth is limited only

to about 13 billion ha, in 2008, the
total agriculture area in the world
was about 4.88 billion Ha
(FAPSTAT,2010).

Arable Land Reducing- This

Alarming
New Delhi:In India cultivable land is

gradually shrinking, making the

agricultural future of this highly
populouscountry bizarre. Latest data
from theAgricultural Ministryshows that
as many as 20 states reported decrease
in cultivablelandto the extent of
790,000 hectares in four years from
2007-08 to 2010-11.

Report shows that only five states have taken some steps to increase the areas under cultivation.Gujarat
is the only big state which increased the area of cultivable land followed by Manipur, Mizoram, Jammu &
Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh.Assam, Goa and Sikkim have adhered to the policy of not tinkering with
land which can be used for farming.Haryanashowed the sharpest decline in area under cultivation.

Urbanization Effects
Climate change: Green covers substituted by concrete cover,

brings in rise in temperatures. The climate patterns of all the

cities have changed. Average temperatures have gone up by 2-4
Degree Celsius.
Loss of neighborhood agriculture land, resulting in poor supply of

vegetables to cities.
The vegetables for all the cities have to be transported from long

distance growing areas, adding on to the cost of vegetables.

Supply of vegetables grown from polluted sewage channel

waters as health hazard.

In consideration of the world forecast on population growth rate,

food security, adverse effects of the continuing horizontal

farming activities on the ecology and climate, health, nutrition
and other factors.

Precision Farming is the

Solution
Traditional Cultivation Methods have to be

improved with modern methods of growing

Protected Cultivation Models of Various Types
should be adopted.
Modern Methods of Pest and Disease Management
should be applied
Now is the time to measure the productivity by
per Square Meter, instead of Per Acre
Smart Utilization of major inputs like Water, Light,
Growing Space to ensure highest
productivity/sq.m. area.

Old Methods of Irrigation- Flood Irrigation,

still prevalent, must be abandoned.
