My work
Developed a website called
www.teachertrainingvideos.com
Step by step videos to help teachers use
technology in their teaching and learning.
About 300,000 visits a year and a newsletter that
has more than 21,000 subscribers
Uses the same technology as much of the content
in the Flipped Classroom ie Screen Capture
Software. Tools like Camtasia, SnagIt, ScreenR,
JING
Example

Flipped
Classroom

It is a form of blended learning

It makes use of the fact that a lot of the teaching
stuff can now be digitized and consumed up
home.
Free up more time for focus on tasks, coursework,
projects in the class ( in groups/pairs/individuals).
Put on the map by the work of Aaron Sams /and
the Khan Academy.
Many people had Flipped their classes long
before their work
For example my own project took place in 2006
and was given 40,000 worth of funding from
JISC/HEA in the UK

What is it?
It is not a methodology.
It is more about the way that we organise our learning
content.
It fits very well with the Higher Education lecture mode.
It attempts to bring the coursework elements into the
classroom ( where the teacher can help) and move the
teaching or input out of the lesson.
It requires a lot of initial work as a lot of material needs
to be digitized. It also requires the teacher to create
interesting learning tasks/coursework for the actual
class time.
At the heart is a clear distinction between the types of
learning taking place ( see next page).
Part of it is about putting more responsibility on the
part of the learner ( autonomy).

Bishop/Verleg
er

We define the flipped classroom

as an educational technique
that consists of two parts:
interactive group learning
activities inside the classroom,
and direct computer-based
individual instruction outside
the classroom.

Challenges
Initial work.
Learning culture of the students.
What to do with students that dont do the initial
work at home?
How do you deal with the different pace of
learning?
Producing the group based, task based activities
that take place in the lesson.
What do students do with the videos?

Learning
theory

In ELT
We dont tend to spend the whole class teaching.
A lot of what we do is already group based, task
based and focusing on the learning.
Could have some place in our classes. For
example writing, grammar, study guidance,
strategies for learning, reading.
Also has a place in teacher training.
Possible more EAP/Skills based courses.
Possible links well with the development of
autonomy.

My flip
In 2004 I took over the MSc in Multimedia and
Education.
Numbers dropping. Computer Science in decline.
Began an experiment where I moved a lot of the
traditional. teaching stuff out of the class.
Reduced lecture time to 1 hour a week.
Increased tutorial time.
Class time was not group based activities but
focused on the course work ( traditional idea of
Flipped Classroom).
Added the learning content on
www.multimediatrainingvideos.com

Reaction

Students working on course work in tutor time

Students accessed videos at home
Lower level students really benefitted
Created a buzz on the course
Started with my own work but slowly other
teachers came on board
Flipped about 50% of the whole master degree
Essentially produced a whole range of Camtasia
learning videos

All on-line
Made controversial decision to add content onto
the internet for free
Anyone could access the videos
Generated a lot of interest in the course
Many inquiries on the back of using the videos
Students who applied could also go to the videos
to get an idea about the course.
Numbers increased at a time when the department
closed all but two M level course
In the final survey 15 students out of 27 students
said that th website had been a major factor/or the
key factor that made them decide to join the
course.

Camtasia
SnagIt
Present.Me
( free/paid)

Free tools

Screen-cast-o
matic
myBrainShark
Present.Me
JING

Present.Me

Upload PowerPoints/Google docs.

Add voice and web cam.
Free ( there is an educational version)
Allows for recordings of up to 1 hour ( research
would suggest 15 minutes is about right for input)
Since tool is free also has loads of other
applications in ELT.
Example of student using Present.Me

SnagIT
Allows you to record the screen of your computer.
Great for talking about images, graphs, websites,
mini lecture input.
Can be share on the YouTube, saved on the
computer etc
Feedback
Mini grammar lesson

Research
Some research has been done.
Tends to focus on the response of the
students/teachers. Lots at things like motivation,
interest in the course.
Assessment hasnt changed. So using a new approach
to delivering learning but not assessing different skills.
Need much more real focus on.
Changes in the learning culture.
Amount of work teachers/students need to do.
Impact on learning, motivation.
What is really happening in the class? Is it group based?
Task based?
What are the teachers doing at home?

Extracting
Creates more project based, group based
opportunities.
Students still prefer face to face however..
Prefer group based activities to lectures ( free up
lecture time).
Organises the blend more efficiently. A lot of
digital stuff has been simply added to a course.

with you on Saturday. When Googling 'Russell

Stannard' there seems to be only two of us on the
internet. You could have been anywhere in the
world, but there you were sitting next to me in
the train! I had for a long time wondered about you
because we are broadly in the same business:
university academic, writing books, making videos.
Now I have some more amazing news for you. I have
been studying our family.
