Cultural Creatives!

Shaping Globalization:
Civil Society, Cultural
Power and Threefolding
(2000)

Nicanor Perlas

Amidst the turmoil of the global economy, a different

kind of globalization has been brewing worldwide. It is
the globalization of new cultural values based on
social and ecological responsibility. This kind
of globalization is the work of people that social
scientists are calling Cultural Creatives.
Social scientists first recognized Cultural Creatives as
a reaction to the narrow conservatism of
traditionalism and the materialism of Modernism
predominant in post-war America. This is the
materialistic Modernism that has given us elite
globalization
- Nicanor Perlas, 2000. Shaping Globalization: Civil
Society, Cultural Power and Threefolding

Cultural Creatives are behind such recent visible and leading edge
phenomena as the USD $1 trillion sustainable development investments,
environmentally sound technologies (EST), sustainable consumerism, ecotourism, and the call for a more socially and ecologically responsible global
economy. They have encouraged an increasing number of businesses to
reinvent themselves, serving the "greening" edge of their consumer markets,
instead of the wasteful materialistic trends of the past.
Cultural Creatives also impact other large-scale social processes. While their
lifestyles have radically altered the content of media advertising, Cultural
Creatives are also active in the various social movements seeking a
more equitable global economy. They advocate for leaner and more activist
States. They spread democratic values, including direct
democracy, which is now the dominant value in the world of polity.
They are the human beings behind the emergence of civil society, the
potent new global force that is starting to shape the behavior of both
transnational corporations and governments. They are behind the birth
of the new whole field of study in mainstream sociology concerned with
understanding the "new social movements.

Power and Threefolding

The Cultural Creatives: How 50

Million People are Changing the
World (2001)

Cultural Creatives tend to reject hedonism,

materialism, and cynicism generally associated
with [one-sided, elite] globalization. They are less
concerned with making a lot of money, although
most live comfortably. They also tend to walk
their talk, three-fourths being involved in
volunteer activities [a certain indicator for
involvement with civil society]. On the deepest
level, they are powerfully attuned to global
issues and whole systems. Their icon is a
photograph of the earth as a blue pearl hanging
in black space.
- Paul H. Ray, February, 1997. The Emerging
Culture, American Demographics
(Demographics.com)

I found that values are terrific predictors. What was new, what
nobody expected, was that this values group belonged to
subcultures, a way of valuing things, seeing life and talking about
the world. We knew about the Traditionals, who were social
conservatives and religious conservatives, and the Moderns, who
were very materialistic and live by getting and spending.
And then there was this third group that, when we got started
represented about twenty percent of the population and was clearly
slowly growing and clearly had not been there in the few value
surveys that had been tried years earlier. As near anyone could tell,
they had not been there before the 1960s. After a while, I started to
say, Well, they are more creative about new ways of life. They are
more creative about the products they want. And there are cultural
differences. So they must be Cultural Creatives.

Same Planet, Different Worlds: How Cultural Creatives Are
Transcending Alienation And Isolation To Bring Forward The Practical
Wisdom of Conscious Living

You are likely to be a Cultural Creative if you

1. love Nature and are deeply concerned about its destruction
2. are strongly aware of the problems of the whole planet (global
warming, destruction of rainforests, overpopulation, lack of
ecological sustainability, exploitation of people in poorer countries)
and want to see more action on them, such as limiting economic
growth
3. would pay more taxes or pay more for consumer goods if you
could know the money would go to clean up the environment and
to stop global warming
4. place a great deal of importance on developing and
maintaining your relationships
5. place a lot of value on helping other people and bringing out
their unique gifts
6. do volunteering for one or more good causes

7. care intensely about both psychological and spiritual

development
8. see spirituality or religion as important in your life, but
are concerned about the role of the Religious Right in
politics
9. want more equality for women at work, and more
women leaders in business and politics
10. are concerned about violence and abuse of women
and children around the world
11. want our politics and government spending to put
more emphasis on childrens education and well-being, on
rebuilding our neighborhoods and communities, and on
creating an ecologically sustainable future
12. are unhappy with both the Left and the Right in
politics, and want a to find a new way that is not in the
mushy middle

13. tend to be somewhat optimistic about our future, and distrust

the cynical and pessimistic view that is given by the media
14. want to be involved in creating a new and better way of life in
your country
15. are concerned about what the big corporations are doing in
the name of making more profits: downsizing, creating
environmental problems, and exploiting poorer countries
16. have your finances and spending under control, and are not
concerned about overspending
17. dislike all the emphasis in modern culture on success and
making it, on getting and spending, on wealth and luxury goods
18. like people and places that are exotic and foreign, and like
experiencing and learning about other ways of life
If you agreed with 10 or more, youre probably a Cultural Creative.

An Evolving Collective

The Filipino Cultural Creatives provides a

mutual space for advocates and advocacies.

A NODE trying to
connect other NODES

In botany and dendrology, a rhizome (/

razo m/, from Ancient Greek: rhzma "mass
of roots",[1] from rhiz "cause to strike root")[2]
is a modified subterranean stem of a plant that
is usually found underground, often sending
out roots and shoots from its nodes.

TRANSVERSALITY - In mathematics, transversality is a

notion that describes how spaces can intersect; transversality
can be seen as the "opposite" of tangency, and plays a role
in general position. It formalizes the idea of a generic
intersection in differential topology. It is defined by
considering the linearizations of the intersecting spaces at
the points of intersection.

TransConversation

Filipino Cultural Creatives lets advocates support one

another. In other words, it aims for sustainability.

Filipino Cultural Creatives is Culture based, tries to institute

society's values into the Economy and Polity of the nation.
(Nicanor Perlas threefolding.)

Filipino Cultural Creatives is healing for the

nation, and for the Cultural Creatives themselves.

Were drawn to the image of the lone

genius whose mystical moment of
insight changes the world. But the lone
genius is a myth; instead its the group
genius that generates breakthrough
innovation. When we collaborate,
creativity unfolds across people; the
sparks fly faster, and the whole is
greater than the sum of its parts.
