CONCEPT OF TG

PARALLEL WITH
GRID

TG parallel with grid feedback is given to

steam governing system and to generator AVR.
Based on the ON/OFF status of TG parallel with
grid feedback, governing system changes its
mode of operation between speed control mode
& mw control mode.
Based on the ON/OFF status of TG parallel with
grid feedback, generator AVR changes its mode
of operation between voltage control mode &
power factor control mode.
To under stand how and from where the TG
parallel with grid feedback is taken, it is
required to go through switchyard scheme and
the breakers associated to create path between
TG and grid to export power.

SEL switchyard is built with BREAKER AND

HALF configuration. SLDs in following slides will
give a better idea about power export pattern in
different conditions.
1. All breakers are in OFF position.
2. All four Units are running and both transmission
lines are available for exporting power to grid.
3. Generator protection operated and GCB-1
tripped.
4. GT-1, UAT-1 protection operated and GCB-1,
GTCB-1 and TIE-1 breakers tripped.
5. When SEL to Nellore Pooling Station line is
tripped, total power will be exported through
SEL to MEPL inter connection line and there will
not be any disturbance to running units.
6. When SEL to MEPL inter connection line tripped,
total power will be exported through SEL to

IMPORTANCE OF TG parallel with grid FEEDBACK

TO GOVERNOR

Turbine rolling will be carried out using Governor speed

control mode till the turbine reaches its rated RPM and
synchronization of TG with grid. Once the TG got
synchronized with grid the TG parallel with grid command
will be fed to steam governing system and Governor changes
its mode of operation to MW control mode. Governor remains
in the same mode as long as the TG parallel with grid ON
feedback is available. As soon as Governor receives TG
parallel with grid OFF command, it changes its mode to
speed control mode and tries to maintain rated RPM of
turbine to sustain the unit with home load. To bring back the
turbine to rated RPM Sudden opening or closing of governor
valve will be taken place up to required level depends on
current running RPM of turbine. Time delay in receipt of TG
parallel with grid OFF command to Governor plays a very
crucial role in controlling turbine RPM.

IMPORTANCE OF TG parallel with grid FEEDBACK

TO AVR
AVR will be in voltage control mode till the
synchronization of TG with grid. Once the TG got
synchronized with grid the TG parallel with grid
command will be fed to AVR and its mode of
operation changes to Power factor control mode.
AVR remains in the same mode as long as the TG
parallel with grid ON feedback is available. As
soon as AVR receives TG parallel with grid OFF
command, it changes its mode to voltage control
mode and tries to maintain rated voltage of
Generator using droop control to sustain the unit
with home load. Time delay in receipt of TG
parallel with grid OFF command to AVR plays a
very crucial role in controlling Generator voltage
before it reaches the trip limit of Over/Under
voltage protection.
