APPLICATIO
N
For my OJT application, I
prepared my resume and an
endorsement letter sign by
the
Civil
Department
Chairman of our school. I
submitted both to the HR
Manager of EEI Corporation
and took a qualifying exam
along with many
other
applicants.
After
being
informed that I was qualified,
I was given a psychological
exam and had to submit a
few other requirements. We
were oriented and each
designated a site where we
would be taking up our OJT.

April 15, 2013. This was the first day of

our OJT. As we arrived at the site, I began to
get this feeling that everyone was staring at
us, especially the workers in the area. They
were probably wondering who we were and
what we were doing there. Well, the site
was as expected; busy workers, transit
mixers, rebars, and other construction
materials and equipments could be seen. As
we introduced ourselves as OJTs to the
security guards, they kindly directed us to
the personnels office. That was where we
met Sir Art Littaua, the field administrator.
He gave us a brief orientation of what we
will be experiencing at the site and gave us
an idea of what to expect. He also explained
the four different departments and their
roles in a construction project. After an hour
or so, one of the safety officers, Ms. Malou,
then gave a brief discussion about the
importance of safety during work especially
at the site. Well, in the beginning, we were
already told of how EEI prioritized and gave
importance to safety and how they were
awarded for this.

Later
on
that
morning,
it
was
agreed that we were
to visit the four
departments, either
for one or two weeks
each. Supposedly, as
explained by Sir Art,
the first department
that we were to go to
was
the
Project
Control Group (PCG)
followed
by
the
Engineering
Department,
then
the Field Operations
Group (FOG), and
finally, the Quality
Control Group (QC).
But due to certain
circumstances,
we
spent the first week
with the Engineering
Department.

Before heading on to the engineering

department that morning, we were
introduced to Mr. Edgar Abejero, the
construction manager at that time. He
discussed
the
importance
of
management in relation to the success of
a construction project. After that, Sir Art
introduced as to Sir Lloyd Llorin, head of
the Engineering Department. This was
when we learned about the project
operation plan (POP). All throughout that
day Sir Lloyd explained the project
operation plan and the various functions
of the engineering department with the
aid of a creative PowerPoint presentation.
He was even able to share a bit of his
experiences with the company and
encouraged us to take advantage of the
opportunity we were given for our
training.

Engineering

As I have mentioned earlier, we spent
our

first
week
with
the
Engineering
Department. We expected to learn much
from that department because as what
we were told, this department was more
on the technical part compared to others.
What we expected to learn from them
was how to create cutting lists,
estimates, and learn about a few
engineering softwares. The people in that
department seemed to be really busy
and had so much work to do each day.
But despite that, they still managed to
make time to teach us a few things
during our stay there. Most of the time,
we were tasked to do some office works
such compilation of plans, summarizing
the list of construction bulletins using
Excel, and editing of framing plans using
AutoCAD. Although our expectations
werent pretty much fulfilled, we were
still able to learn a lot of things from

Quality Control
Group
For the following week,

we were
assigned to the quality control
group. At first I thought that the
people there were not so friendly
because as we were told before, as a
quality control, you had to be tough
and very strict. But, of course, that
was only when it comes to work.
This was the department where we
felt very much welcome and had
learned
so
much
from.
The
engineers in this department were
able to perform their jobs in ways
that seemed stress-free and you can
tell how much fun their jobs were. In
this department, we felt like we were
already employees because they
even allowed us to do the actual
duties of quality control engineers
such as site inspections and tests. It
was also during this week that we
were required PPTs and were able to
go up to the active floor which was

Quality Control
We were taught about the duties

and responsibilities of a Quality
Control Engineer
Given lectures about
construction notes, rebar details
and schedules.
Inspected the rebars of beams
and girders at the active floor.
We were even taught a few
things about the electrical and
mechanical works in the site.
We also attended meetings with
the subcontractors which were
held every Thursday afternoon.

Field
Operations
Of all the four departments, the
Field Operations Group (FOG) is the
largest by means of staff and office.
It was also the busiest. It was in this
department that we were able to
differentiate clearly the architectural
and structural parts and phases of
the project. We stayed in this
department for two weeks also. Each
day, there was a staff assigned to
us. All of them were pretty much
helpful and were able to give us
lectures about their fortes despite
the tight schedule. We enjoyed it a
lot in this department because we
were able to experience a lot of new
things during our stay there.

The architectural and structural surveyors

showed and taught us what their duties were in
the site. They also shared a few of their
experiences as surveyors and showed us the
equipments that they used. They allowed us to
experience what it was like to supervise the
surveying team.
The formworks supervisor taught us all about
the formworks including their parts and
purposes. We were also introduced to the
foreman/lead man for corresponding areas of
the structure.
One of the Safety Officers gave us the
permission to climb the tower crane at the site
and we were also able to have a small chat with
the crane operator.
We were brought to the lay down area not far
from the site location and were able to observe
how the reinforcement bars were bent,
fabricated and loaded on to trucks.

The architectural supervisor gave us a tour

from the ground floor up to the 29th floor and
explained to us what his duties were. We were
able to supervise and monitor the ongoing
installations of masonry works in the building.
We were able to learn about the different parts
of scaffolds and were also able to assemble and
dismantle it ourselves with the help of the
scaffolders.
One of the construction managers discussed to
us the tile installation process and assigned us
to do tiles monitoring for a few days.
We had a walk thru with the project manager
and were also taught about MEPFS which
included mechanical, electrical, plumbing and
sanitary, and fire protection works.

Project Control
For the final week of our
Group
stayed with the Project

OJT, we
Control
Group (PCG). This department was
mainly in charge of the planning,
cost, and materials of the project.
This was a small group but also
coordinated with other departments
including the logistics group. Here,
they explained to us all about the
project schedules, the workforce,
salary, and purchasing of materials
needed. They also monitored the
developments in the project making
sure that everything was still on
schedule.

Teamwork, being innovative,

creative
and
compassionate
about the duties given to me
were only a few of the things I
learned from this on-the-job
training. Not only did I learn so
many things but I even feel like I
already am an engineer. This
was quite an experience and
something that I truly enjoyed.
This OJT has inspired me a lot to
pursue my dream of becoming
an engineer.
And that was how 240 hours of
my summer
internship
