LIONEL ANDRES MESSI

Lionel Messi is the heir apparent to the throne left vacant by Diego Armando Maradona. The waters are divided between those who
consider him to be far from being the best No. 10, and those who believe that Messi will be even better than Maradona.
Born in Rosario, he cut his teeth in the youth ranks of Newell's Old Boys, until a hormonal problem that affected his growth changed the
plans of his family and, of course, his personal future. Facing expensive treatment for their son, Messi's parents moved to Spain as
Newell's were not able to afford the medical costs related to his condition, and even the wealthiest Argentine teams, such as River Plate,
refused to foot the bill.
After his first trial with Barcelona, the Catalan coaches had no doubts. They decided to sign Messi and pay for his medical treatment. His
growth was noticeable within Barca, and in little time he came to be considered one of the great talents at the club. He made his debut
in the first division in October 2004, against Espanyol, and Barcelona have since adopted him as one of their greatest idols.
His first championship would come in the Liga season of 2004-05. Since then, and playing a more prominent role every season, he has
won every major club trophy at Camp Nou -- including a stunning haul of six in 2008-09 -- and claimed the World Player of the Year [later
the FIFA Ballon d'Or] award four times in four years.
Messi has proven his credentials on the biggest stage with goals in two of the three Champions League finals he has won with Barcelona,
with his achievements leaving many in little doubt that he is the best player of his generation; possibly of all time.
That idea was given further weight in March 2012 when, at the age of 24, he became the all-time top scorer at Barcelona -- beating the
232 goals of Cesar Rodriguez.
The forward's hat-trick in Barcelona's 4-3 win over Real Madrid in March 2014 also saw him become the all-time top scorer in El Clasico
clashes.
Messi endured criticism over his performances during the 2013-14 campaign despite scoring 28 goals in 31 Liga appearances as
Barcelona lost the title to Atletico Madrid in a dramatic final day clash, but the forward committed his long-term future to the club with a
new deal in May 2014.
Strengths:His ball skills are second to none, his runs from midfield are usually lethal and he is almost impossible to tackle when he gets
his head down. His balance when running at speed is incredible.
Weaknesses:Too often he searches for a way to finish moves by himself without looking for team-mates in a better position to shoot at
goal.
Career high:Winning the 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 awards for the best player in the world.
Career low:He was unable to perform to his best in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, where Argentina were eliminated in the quarterfinals with Messi looking on from the bench.
Style:Quick, incisive, balanced, a stylish runner with the ball.
Quotes:"Messi is my Maradona," said Maradona himself, as the head coach of the Argentine national team in 2010.
Trivia:His debut with the national team (against Hungary) was a disaster: he entered the game in the 18th minute of the second half,
and was sent off just 47 seconds later.

By the age of 21, Messi had receivedBallon d'OrandFIFA World Player of the Year nominations. The
following year, in 2009, he won his firstBallon d'OrandFIFA World Player of the Year awards. He followed
this up by winning the inauguralFIFA Ballon d'Orin2010, and then again in2011and2012. He also won
the 201011UEFA Best Player in Europe Award . At the age of 24, Messi became Barcelona's
all-time top scorer in all official club competitions. At age 25, Messi became the youngest player to score
200 goals inLa Liga.

Commonly ranked as the best player in the world and rated by some in the sport as the greatest of all
time,[3][4][5][6][7][8]Messi is the first football player in history to win four FIFA/Ballons d'Or, all of which he won
consecutively, and the first to win threeEuropean Golden Shoe awards. With Barcelona, Messi has won six
La Ligas, twoCopas del Rey, sixSupercopas de Espaa, threeUEFA Champions Leagues , two
UEFA Super Cups and twoClub World Cups .

Messi is the first and only player to top-score in four consecutive Champions League campaigns, and also
holds the record for themost hat-tricks scored (4) in the competition . In March 2012, Messi made
Champions League history by becoming the first player to score five goals in one match. He also matched
Jos Altafini's record of 14 goals in a single Champions League season. Messi set the European record for
most goals scored in a season during the 201112 season, with 73 goals. In the same season, he set the
current goalscoringrecordin a single La Liga season, scoring 50 goals. Also in that season, Messi became
the first player ever to score and assist in six different official competitions in one season. On 16 February
2013, Messi scored his 300th Barcelona goal. On 30 March 2013, Messi scored in his 19th consecutive La
Liga game, becoming the first footballer in history to net in consecutive matches against every team in a
professional football league. He extended his record scoring streak to 21 consecutive league matches, and
the run came to a halt only when he sustained a hamstring injury. In March 2014, with a hat-trick against
Real Madrid, Messi became the player with the most goals and most hat-tricks in the history ofEl Clsico.

Messi helpedArgentinawin the2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup , finishing as both the best player and the top
scorer (with 6 goals). In2006, he became the youngest Argentine to play and score in theFIFA World Cup ,
and won a runners-up medal at theCopa Amricain2007, in which he was named young player of the
tournament. In2008, he won anOlympic Gold Medal with theArgentina Olympic football team . In
2013,SportsProrated him the second-most marketable athlete in the world. [9]His playing style and
stature have drawn comparisons to compatriotDiego Maradona, who himself declared Messi his "
successor".[10]In2014, Messi led Argentina to theWorld Cup Final, winning four consecutive Man of the
Match awards in the process. He won theGolden Ballaward after being adjudged the best player of the
tournament.

Manuel Neuers displays as a youngster made it immediately apparent to observers that he was destined for greatness. He is the
perfect example of a modern goalkeeper: while his exceptional reflexes and penalty area domination are enough to set him apart
as a top-class all-round custodian, it is Neuers unerringly accurate long-distance throws to team-mates that make him truly
unique, allowing him to swiftly launch attacks both for his club Bayern Munich and the German national team.
The Gelsenkirchen natives path into the game started as a five-year-old with Schalke and he made his Bundesliga debut for the
club 15 years later, before swiftly making the Royal Blues No1 jersey his own. Neuer signed for Bayern in summer 2011 and in
subsequent seasons has been a key part of the clubs triumphs in winning a host of domestic honours as well as the UEFA
Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup titles.
Neuer first made international headlines in 2009 when he lifted the U-21 European Championship crown with Germany. Just a year
later he was Joachim Lows first choice in the senior side at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa after previous incumbent Rene
Adler pulled out through injury.
Neuer took full advantage of the opportunity and has been the countrys undisputed No1 ever since. He was named as Germanys
Player of the Year in 2011 and was voted on to the FIFA/FIFPro World XI two years later.
We can go to the World Cup full of self-belief, Neuer toldFIFA.comin an exclusive interview just a few months ago, determined
to help Germany, bronze medallists at the two most recent finals, win the Trophy for a fourth time.

USAIN BOLT

Arguably the most naturally gifted athlete the world has ever
seen, Usain St Leo Bolt, confirmed his tremendous talents when
he realized his dreams by winning a phenomenal three gold
medals and breaking three world records at the 2008 Olympic
Games in Beijing, China. Bolt became the first man in Olympic
history to win both the 100m and 200m races in world record
times and then as part of the 4x100m team that also smashed
the world record later in the meet.He created history again and
became a legend at the 2012 Olympic Games in London by
defending all three Olympic titles with 100m, 200m and 4x100m
victories, the latter in a new world record time of 36.84 secs.

Between his Olympic successes Usain stayed firmly in the global

spotlightwinning three gold medals and setting two individual world
records at the 2009 IAAF World T&F Championships in Berlin, Germany.
He lowered his 100m time to a staggering 9.58 secs, his 200m time to
19.19 secs and running the third leg helped Jamaica to gold in the
4x100m. He defended his World Championships title in the 200m at the
2011 IAAF World T&F Championships in Daegu, Korea and anchored
Jamaica to another world record of 37.04 secs in the 4x100m. In 2013 at
the IAAF World T&F Championships in Moscow Usain won the 100m,
200m and 4x100m to make it 8 World Championship gold medals. Usain
is currently one of the biggest names in the world of sport both on and
off the track.
While the world danced and celebrated with this precocious talent, this
was a dream waiting to happen and not just an overnight sensation.
As early as age 14, young Usain was opening eyes with his lightning
speed from regional championships in western Jamaica to national meets
set in Kingston to meets in the wider Caribbean.
Usains ascent to the pinnacle of world sprinting started with the most
unlikely of events as his first medal at any meet came in the 80 hurdles
in Class Three at Western Champs held on the campus of his Alma Mater
William Knibb Memorial High in Martha Brae, Trelawny when he jumped
his way to a bronze medal.

2007 was the breakthrough year in that he broke the 30 year old
Jamaican 200m Record, held by the great Donald Quarrie, with a time of
19.75 secs to win the Jamaican Senior T&F Championships. He went to
the 2007 IAAF World T&F Championships in Osaka, Japan in good form
and won two silver medals in the 200m and 4x 100m relay.
In 2008 Usain Bolt rewrote the history books and became one of the
biggest sports stats on the planet. He moved down in distance to the
100m sprint and in his second race of the year broke the world record
with a time of 9.72 secs in New York. Since then he has gone from
strength to strength with his heroic achievements in the Olympic Games
in Beijing and London and in the IAAF World T&F Championships in Berlin,
Daegu & Moscow. He is undoubtedly the Worlds Fastest Man having
broken the 100m world record three times and the 200m record two
times.
Usain has been awarded the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year on two
occasions (2009 & 2010); the IAAF Male Athlete of the Year five times
(2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013) as well as many awards in many
countries in all corners of the world. He has his own clothing line in
conjunction with Puma; his own watch made by Hublot; his own
headphone range Soul by Usain Bolt; his own restaurant Tracks &
Records in Kingston, Jamaica; the Usain Bolt Foundation and endorses
some of the top brands in the world.

CurrentrankingNo.2(7 July 2014)[1]

Rafael Nadal was born inManacor, Balearic Islands, Spain, to Sebastin Nadal, a businessman
who owns an insurance company, a glass and window company, Vidres Mallorca, and manages his
own restaurant, Sa Punta. His mother is Ana Mara Parera, a housewife. He has a younger sister
named Mara Isabel. His uncle,Miguel ngel Nadal, is a retired professionalfootballer, who
played forRCD Mallorca,FC Barcelona, and theSpanish national team .[29]Nadal supports football
clubsReal Madridand RCD Mallorca.[30]Recognizing that Nadal had a natural talent for tennis,
another uncle,Toni Nadal, a former professional tennis player, introduced him to tennis when he
was three years old.[31]
At age eight, Nadal won an under-12 regional tennis championship at a time when he was also a
promising football player. [32]This made Toni Nadal intensify training, and at that time he
encouraged Nadal to play left-handed for a natural advantage on the tennis court, as he noticed
Nadal playedforehandshots with two hands.[32]This may be due to the fact he is ambidextrous,
playing tennis with his left hand, and writing with his right. [33]
When Nadal was 12, he won the Spanish and European tennis titles in his age group and was
playing tennis and football all the time. [32]Nadal's father made him choose between football and
tennis so that his school work would not deteriorate entirely. Nadal said: "I chose tennis. Football
had to stop straight away."[32]
When he was 14, the Spanish tennis federation requested that he leave Mallorca and move to
Barcelonato continue his tennis training. Nadal's family turned down this request, partly
because they feared it would hurt his education, [32]but also because Toni said that "I don't want
to believe that you have to go to America, or other places to be a good athlete. You can do it
from your home."[31]The decision to stay home meant that Nadal received less financial support
from the federation; instead, Nadal's father covered the costs. In May 2001, he defeated former
Grand Slam tournament championPat Cashin a clay-court exhibition match. [29]
Nadal turned professional at the age of 15, [34]and participated in two events on theITFjunior
circuit. In 2002, at the age of 16, Nadal reached the semifinals of the Boy's Singles tournament
at Wimbledon, in his first ITF junior event. [35]
By the age of 17, he beatRoger Federerthe first time they played and became the youngest man
to reach the third round at Wimbledon sinceBoris Becker. At 18, he helped pace Spain over the
US in the juniorDavis Cupin his second, and final, appearance on the ITF junior circuit. At 19,
Nadal won the French Open the first time he played it, a feat not accomplished in Paris for more
than 20 years. He eventually won it the first four times he played at Roland Garros. [34]In 2003, he
had won the ATPNewcomer of the Year Award. Early in his career, Nadal became known for his
habit of biting the trophies he won. [36]

VALENTINO ROSSI

Valentino Rossi was born in Urbino,Marche,[5]and he was still a child

when the family moved toTavullia. Son ofGraziano Rossi, a former
motorcycle racer, he first began riding at a very young age.[6]Rossi's first
racing love waskarting. Fuelled by his mother, Stefania's, concern for
her son's safety, Graziano purchased a kart as substitute for the bike.
However, the Rossi family trait of perpetually wanting to go faster
prompted a redesign; Graziano replaced the 60cc motor with a 100cc
national kart motor for his then 5-year-old son.[7]
Rossi won the regional kart championship in 1990.[8]After this he took
upminimotoand before the end of 1991 had won numerous regional
races.[6]
Rossi continued to race karts and finished fifth at the national kart
championships inParma. Both Valentino and Graziano had started
looking at moving into the Italian 100cc series, as well as the
corresponding European series, which most likely would have pushed
him into the direction ofFormula One. However, the high cost of racing
karts led to the decision to race minimoto exclusively.[citation needed]Through
1992 and 1993, Valentino continued to learn the ins and outs of
minimoto racing.
In 1993, with help from his father,Virginio Ferrari, Claudio Castiglioni
andClaudio Lusuardi(who ran the officialCagivaSport Production team),
he rode aCagiva Mito125cc motorcycle, which he damaged in a firstcorner crash no more than a hundred metres from the pit lane.[9]He
finished ninth that race weekend.[9]
Although his first season in the Italian Sport Production Championship
was varied, he achieved a pole position in the season's final race at
Misano, where he would ultimately finish on the podium. By the second
year, Rossi had been provided with a factory Mito by Lusuardi and won
the Italian title.

MICHAEL SHUMACHER

Schumacher was born inHrth, North Rhine-Westphalia,[12]to Rolf Schumacher, a

bricklayer, and his wife Elisabeth. When Schumacher was four, his father modified his
pedal kartby adding a small motorcycle engine. When Schumacher crashed it into a lamp
post inKerpen, his parents took him to thekartingtrack at Kerpen-Horrem, where he
became the youngest member of the karting club. His father soon built him a kart from
discarded parts and at the age of six Schumacher won his first club championship. To
support his son's racing, Rolf Schumacher took on a second job renting and repairing
karts, while his wife worked at the track's canteen. Nevertheless, when Michael needed a
new engine costing 800DM, his parents were unable to afford it; he was able to continue
racing with support from local businessmen.[13]
Regulations in Germany require a driver to be at least 14 years old to obtain a kart
license. To get around this, Schumacher obtained a license inLuxembourgat the age of
12.[14]
In 1983, he obtained his German license, a year after he won the German Junior Kart
Championship. From 1984 on, Schumacher won many German and European kart
championships. He joined Eurokart dealer Adolf Neubert in 1985 and by 1987 he was the
German and European kart champion, then he quit school and began working as a
mechanic. In 1988 he made his first step into single-seat car racing by participating in the
GermanFormula FordandFormula Knigseries, winning the latter.[15]
In 1989, Schumacher signed withWilli Weber's WTSFormula Threeteam. Funded by
Weber, he competed in the German Formula 3 series, winning the title in 1990. He also
won theMacau Grand Prix. At the end of 1990, along with his Formula 3 rivalsHeinzHarald FrentzenandKarl Wendlinger, he joined theMercedesjunior racing programme in
theWorld Sports-Prototype Championship. This was unusual for a young driver: most of
Schumacher's contemporaries would compete inFormula 3000on the way to Formula
One. However, Weber advised Schumacher that being exposed to professional press
conferences and driving powerful cars in long distance races would help his career. [14]In
the1990 World Sportscar Championship season, Schumacher won the season finale at
theAutdromo Hermanos Rodrguezin aSauberMercedes C11, and finished fifth in the
drivers' championship despite only driving in 3 of the 9 races. He continued with the team
in the1991 World Sportscar Championship season, winning again at the final race of the
season atAutopolisin Japan with aSauberMercedes-Benz C291, leading to a ninth place
finish in the drivers championship. He also competed atLe Mansduring that season,
finishing 5th in a car shared withKarl Wendlingerand Fritz Kreutzpointner. In 1991, he
competed in one race in theJapanese Formula 3000 Championship, finishing second.[15]

After beginning withkarting, Schumacher won the German drivers' championships in

Formula KnigandFormula Threebefore joiningMercedesin theWorld Sportscar
Championship. After one Mercedes-funded race for theJordanFormula One team,
Schumacher signed as a driver for theBenettonFormula One team in 1991. After
winning consecutive championships with Benetton in 1994/5, Schumacher moved to
Ferrariin 1996 and won another five consecutive drivers' titles with them from 2000
to 2004. Schumacher retired from Formula One driving in 2006 staying with Ferrari as
an advisor.[7]Schumacher agreed to return for Ferrari part-way through 2009, as
cover for the badly injuredFelipe Massa, but was prevented by a neck injury.
Schumacher returned to Formula One on a permanent basis from 2010 with the
Mercedesteam before retiring for a second time at the conclusion of the 2012
season.[8]
His career was not without controversy, including being twice involved in collisions in
the final race of a season that determined the outcome of the world championship,
withDamon Hillin1994inAdelaide, and withJacques Villeneuvein1997inJerez.[9]
Off the track Schumacher is an ambassador forUNESCOand a spokesman for driver
safety. He has been involved in numerous humanitarian efforts throughout his life
and donated tens of millions of dollars to charity.[10]Schumacher and his younger
brother,Ralf, are the only brothers to win races in Formula One, and they were the
first brothers to finish 1st and 2nd in the same race, a feat they repeated in four
subsequent races.
In December 2013, Schumacher suffered a serious head injury while skiing. He was
airlifted to a hospital and placed in amedically induced coma, having suffered a
traumatic brain injury. He was in the coma from 29 December 2013 until 16 June
2014. He has left the hospital inGrenoblefor further rehabilitation at the

the youngest male to make a U.S. Olympic swim team in 68 years. [16]
While he did not win a medal, he did make the finals and finished fifth in

2001 World Aquatics Championships, on March 30, Phelps broke the
world record in the 200-meter butterfly to become, at 15 years and 9
months, the youngest man ever to set a swimming world record,

World Swimmer of the Year Award seven times and
American Swimmer of the Year Award nine times as well as the
FINA Swimmer of the Year Award in 2012. His unprecedented
Olympic success in 2008 earned PhelpsSports Illustrated
magazine'sSportsman of the Year award.
After the 2008 Summer Olympics, Phelps started the Michael Phelps
Foundation, which focuses on growing the sport of swimming and
promoting healthier lifestyles. He continues to work with his
foundation after the 2012 Olympics, which he has said will be his
last. In April 2014, Phelps announced he would come out of
retirement, and would enter an event later that month.
