canton in context the project
“the overriding mandate in urban development today is not the development
of efficient solutions to new and pressing city building needs. rather, it is the
colossal task of undoing the negative effects of almost three generations of
planning priorities bred in an era that was gripped by great collective
delusions about limitless growth.”

how does this relate to canton?

the economic struggle faced in many smaller northeastern cities in the past
few decades highlighted by jobs migrating to other ex-urban, national, and
international markets will shift to a struggle for resources and need local
production for sustenance and prosperity.

the sustainability leapfrog…

why sustainability?
why sustainability?
while sustainability it is also…
certainly is…
“development that
meets the needs of
a framework for
the present without responding to the
compromising the emerging
ability of future
generations to meet
competitive threats
their own needs." .” and maintaining
competitive
- brundtland advantage.

how does this apply to canton?
build on completed work the project
many of the proposed plans within the most recent 2003 downtown
masterplan are inherently sustainable, even if not understood and marketed
(yet) as such
mixed-use development
multi-modal transit
landscape corridors
pedestrian oriented design

however…
these mainly physical improvements rely on a belief in URBANISM, that is,
that the CITY as a dense, diverse living arrangement is an enjoyable and
worthwhile place to live, work, visit, and invest in – requiring not just a
physical makeover but a mental makeover as well.
ok, what kind of policies and funding begin
to pay for this sort of stuff?
assess existing needs in light
of new funding sources

canton’s needs policies funding sources

example: incentives for energy energy efficiency
reduce operating budget efficiency participants projects funded by
D.O.E. and/or Ohio DOD
energy efficiency
program
example: tax breaks for potential USEPA
revitalize underused (re)development within brownfield funding
downtown parcels specified urban zones

example: incentivize alternative green energy ohio

job creation and energy industries for AMP – ohio,
workforce development energy independence municipalities
define canton’s competitive edge
by integrating physical design strategies to attract people to a sustainable
downtown and leveraging new financing sources, canton can both redefine
its image and establish a competitive edge to attract new business,
residential, state and private investment.
short-term projects
examples: LED traffic lights, boston
aluminum industries of ohio, cleveland
biodiesel, pittsburgh

downtown and leveraging new financing sources, canton can both redefine
its image and establish a competitive edge to attract new business,
residential, state and private investment.
long-term strategies
examples: alternative energy investments,
wind power - bowling green, ohio
brownfields- brockton, ma
emerging technologies
organic agriculture
waste and by-product exchange
green building code adoption
identify synergies and partnerships
developing robust sustainability programs means recognizing previously
undiscovered synergies and partnerships, sometimes among groups who are
traditionally separate

benefit: state and business

positions ohio for future carbon regulations
and carbon market

example: state level alternative energy commitments (PA)

with canton’s leadership, provides incentives

for local energy infrastructure manufacturing
jobs benefit: municipality and working
ensures stable energy prices residents
into future
benefit: business and residents
identify synergies and partnerships
developing robust sustainability programs means recognizing previously
undiscovered synergies and partnerships, sometimes among groups who are
traditionally separate

benefit: everyone
reduces transportation distance for food
and saves energy

example: local lunches (portland, or)

provide locally-grown produce to schoolkids

benefit: kids
creates market for local agricultural
products
benefit: local farms
