DEFINITION OF TURNING

Turning is a technique of turns in

swimming, used to reverse the direction in
which the person is swimming. It is done
when the swimmer reaches the end of the
swimming pool but still has one or more
lengths to swim.

SKILLS IN TURNING
1 . Freestyle Turn
Flip turns are mainly used during the crawl
stroke, also referred to as swimming freestyle.
The goal of the flip turn and pushing off from
the wall is transfer the energy and momentum
you have build up in 1 direction. This allow lap
swimming and competitive swimming to be
performed as efficiently and quickly.

SKILLS IN TURNING
2. Breaststroke
A swimming stroke in which the arms are
pushed forwards and then swept back in a
circular movement, while the legs are tucked
in towards the body and then kicked out in a
corresponding movement. The breaststroke is
one of the most difficult strokes.

SKILLS IN TURNING
3. Backstroke
1. Start the somersault - Tuck your chin, perform a small
dolphin kick while finishing your arm pull with your hands
ending at your sides.
2. Finish the somersault - Go into a tuck (knees and feet
pulled in) and use your arms to help keep the somersault
going. Keeping your elbows on your side, push water toward
your head with your palms and forearms.
3. Layout - As you complete the half- somersault, let your
elbows release from the sides of your body, bring your
hands together, straighten your arms, and point them the
direction you just came from - the direction you want to go
now. From the waist up, you should be in a streamline think of making your body match the shape of a torpedo as
much as possible.

BACKSTROKE TURN

4. Land - Extend your legs, landing your feet squarely

on the wall, toes pointing up. As you get better, you will
want to be close enough to the wall to have your feet
land with your knees and hips are bent appropriately,
knees near a 90 degree angle, hips near 110 degrees.
5. Upper Body Streamline - Everything from your hips
up to the tips of your fingers should form a straight line,
parallel to both the bottom and surface of the water.
You will be completely underwater, with everything
from your hips to your fingertips straight and
streamlined, pointing where you want to go.
6. Leave - Straighten your legs, thrusting you off of the
wall, moving your entire body into a streamline
(remember - torpedo). Push straight or slightly deeper.

SKILLS IN TURNING
4. Butterfly
When performing a butterfly turn, your goal
should be to get in and off the wall as quickly
as possible. How fast you can turn depends
largely on how quickly you can get your feet
onto the wall.
The butterfly open turn can be broken up into
three distinct phases:
chest slap
hip slap
hand recovery close to the cap

BUTTERFLY TURN

Chest Slap After both hands simultaneously touch the

wall, one arm is immediately brought back into the body
with the elbow pressed against the ribs and the hand
slapping the upper part of the chest, close to the shoulder
(Some coaches modify the positioning of this arm).
Hip Snap Draw your knees up quickly toward your chest
and the wall with toes pointed. Both chest slap and hip
snap movements are performed simultaneously. This
causes the shoulder of your recovering arm to drop in the
water while your hips rotate to allow you to place just
your toes horizontally on the wall. While your legs are
brought under the body, the head and shoulders are
brought straight back, looking up toward the ceiling or
sky.

BUTTERFLY TURN

Hand Recovers Close To the Cap - The hand that remained

on the wall will recover close to the head as if you were
saluting to the official standing over your lane. Continue to
drop back until your feet are on the wall and your hands
meet in a streamline.
Push off the wall with your toes only, as if you were jumping
rope. Your heels should never be placed firmly on the wall.
When pushing off, your feet are planted on the wall, parallel
with the bottom of the pool. This will help you to push off
more on your side, since pushing with the toes pointed down
causes a lot of resistance. As you push off, you will twist the
body in a corkscrew motion onto the stomach. Your feet must
push off with your shoulders past vertical and with your chest
facing the bottom, as you hold your streamline tight by
squeezing your arms against your ears.

DRILLS
1.
a.
b.
c.
d.
e.

The swimmer demonstrates the turn by :

Positioning the body the correct distance from the
wall (freestyle and backstroke) or
Correctly positioning the hands on the wall
(breaststroke and butterfly)
Using the hands and legs to facilitate a quick
rotation
Correctly positioning the hands or feet on the wall
Drive off the wall in a streamlined body position.

DRILLS

2. The drill focuses on :

a. The distance of the body from the wall
b. Contact with the wall (i.e hands or feet)
c. The fluency and speed of the body rotation or
pivot
d. Position on the wall to facilitate a strong,
horizontal push off.
