BEHAVIOUR OF LIGHT

GAUGE SECTIONS AS
BEAMS AND
COLOUMNS

OBJECTIVE
To test the Cold rolled section for the structural behavior (as beams and

coloumns)under the loading action using the loading frame equipment.

To compare the theoretical and practical values of cold rolled section
under loading.
To test the Hot rolled section in the same way as cold rolled section
tested.
To analyse the behavior of hot rolled and cold rolled section
To conclude the reliability of cold formed steel to use it as a structural
member.

What is light gauge section?

Light gauge steel construction is very similar
to wood framed construction in principle - the
wooden framing members are replaced with
thin steel sections.

The steel sections used here are called cold

formed sections.

The sections are formed or given shape at

room temperature, in contrast to thicker hot
rolled sections, that are shaped while the steel
is molten hot.

Cold formed steel is shaped by guiding thin

sheets of steel through a series of rollers,
each roller changing the shape very slightly.

The net result is converting a flat sheet of

steel into various shaped sections.

The steel used here is coated with zinc

(called galvanized) or a mixture of zinc and
aluminum to protect it from corrosion.

How light gauge section looks?

The thicknesses of steel used here
range from about 1 to 3mm for
structural sections, and 1 to 2mm for
non-structural sections.

2"x4" and 2"x6" are common sizes.

How it differ from Hot rolled

section?
HOT ROLLED SECTION
The process of hot rolling involves rolling
steel at a temperature above the steels
recrystallization temperature, which
takes place over 1700 degrees
Fahrenheit.

Steel that is above the recrystallization

temperature can be shaped and formed
much more easily than colder steel, and
the steel can start in much larger sizes

COLD ROLLED
SECTION

Cold rolled steel is manufactured

at temperatures below its
recrystallization temperature,
typically at around room
temperature.
Because the steel is manufactured
at a much lower temperature,
theres no need to worry about the
steel shrinking or changing form or
appearance.

HOT ROLLED SECTION

COLD ROLLED
SECTION

Hot rolled products often will have a scaly finish and more rounded and
less precise corners than cold rolled steel will.

The cold rolled steel end products has a much smoother appearance
and may have square corners more accurate in dimension and finish.

How the sections can be

designed?
For the design of cold rolled sections the following code books are used
IS 801:1975
IS 808:1989
AS 1163
For the design of cold rolled sections the following code books are used
