Sinceopticalfiberisawaveguide,lightcanpropagateinanumber
ofmodes
Ifafiberisoflargediameter,lightenteringatdifferentangleswill
excitedifferentmodeswhilenarrowfibermayonlyexciteonemode
Multimodepropagationwillcausedispersion,whichresultsinthe
spreadingofpulsesandlimitstheusablebandwidth
Singlemodefiberhasmuchlessdispersionbutismoreexpensive
toproduce.Itssmallsize,togetherwiththefactthatitsnumerical
apertureissmallerthanthatofmultimodefiber,makesitmore
difficulttocoupletolightsources

Gradedindexfiberisacompromisemultimodefiber,buttheindexof
refractiongraduallydecreasesawayfromthecenterofthecore

Dispersion
Dispersioninfiberopticsresultsfromthefactthatinmultimode
propagation,thesignaltravelsfasterinsomemodesthanitwouldinothers
Singlemodefibersarerelativelyfreefromdispersionexceptfor
intramodaldispersion
