(The Divine Comedy)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bU_bGYaa3FY
Back in the day you had been part of the smart set
Youd holidayed with kings, dined out with starlets
From London to New York, Cap Ferrat to Capri
In perfume by Chanel and clothes by Givenchy
You sipped Camparis with David and Peter
At Noels parties by Lake Geneva
Scaling the dizzy heights of high society
Armed only with a cheque-book and a family tree

Chorus 2: You chased the sun around the Cote dAzur

Until the light of youth became obscured
And left you on your own and in the shade
An English lady of a certain age
And if a nice young man would buy you a drink
Youd say with a conspiratorial wink
You wouldnt think that I was sixty-three
And hell say, No, you couldnt be!

Your sons in stocks and bonds and lives back in

Chorus 1: You chased the sun around the Cote dAzur Surrey
Flies down once in a while and lives in a hurry
Until the light of youth became obscured
Your daughter never finished her finishing school
And left you on your own and in the shade
Married a strange young man of whom you dont approve
An English lady of a certain age
And if a nice young man would buy you a drink
Youd say with a conspiratorial wink
You wouldnt think that I was seventy
And hed say, No, you couldnt be!
You had to marry someone very very rich
So that you might be kept in the style to which
You had all of your life been accustomed to
But that the socialists had taxed away from you
You gave him children, a girl and a boy
To keep your sanity a nanny was employed
And when the time came they were sent away
Well, that was simply what you did in those days

Your husbands hollow heart gave out one Christmas

Day
He left the villa to his mistress in Marseilles
And so you come here to escape your little flat
Hoping someone will fill your glass and let you chat about
how
Chorus 3: You chased the sun around the Cote dAzur
Until the light of youth became obscured
And left you all alone and in the shade
An English lady of a certain age
And if a nice young man would buy you a drink
Youd say with a conspiratorial wink
You wouldnt think that I was fifty-three

and

you

are

penniless. You really like the handbags

in this new shop, VAHO, but youre
sure they must be too expensive!
However,

its

your

girlfriend/best

friends birthday and you know shed

just love one of these handbags. A
couple of models, Kioto and Tokio,
have caught your eye.
Will the shop assistant be able to
convince you before you run to Zara
and buy the cheapest T-shirt you can
find?

You are a shop assistant and you sell

VAHO and Ragbag products in your
shop. A potential customer would like
to buy a handbag, but he/she is not
completely convinced. Draw his/her
attention to the design, the finished
effect and the benefits of buying
recycled products (i.e. for the
environment).
Tokio, Kioto, Mikado, Clubbing, Paper
and Pekin are made in Spain while
Calcutta, Cameroon and Delhi are
made in India. Prices normally vary
from 32 to 60 depending on size.
You know they are a bit expensive, but
theres a wide selection of models.
Try first to convince the customer to
buy one of the expensive bags, but if
you cant, maybe youll find something
cheaper in the catalogue youve just

received from VAHO

Fashion or Trashion VI
STUDENT A
You are a sales representative at a
VAHO WORKS stand in a craft fair
in Barcelona.
You
are
an
environmentallyfriendly company and design
objects using recycled materials
like canopies,
advertising flags
and banners.
Part of the production is done by
the prisoners of La Modelo or
disabled people. Emphasize the
high quality of the finished effect
and that the bags are not only
unique, but also strong, waterproof
and long-lasting.
Try to convince store owners that
doing business with your company
will be profitable for both of you
(and for the environment! )

HANDOUT 2
STUDENT B
You are a Majorcan handbag shop
owner and you are in a craft fair in
Barcelona. You are looking for new
brands which are appealing and can
attract
the
attention
of
new
customers.
Lately, you are not making much
profit and you need to revise your
commercial strategy.
Maybe you will return to that VAHO
WORKS stand that caught your eye

FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITY
Students who are interested in learning more about the companies we
have just seen might want to browse the following websites:
www.vaho.ws
www.ragbag.eu
www.onsustain.com
Besides, they could also prepare an oral presentation or a written
report on an environmentally-friendly company and answer questions
like:
- whats their environmental policy?
- where do they operate (local / regional / national / global company)?
- what kind of recycled / reused materials do they work with?
- what are the companys objectives & how do they work to meet them?
(eg. fund-raising events)
- who founded the company?, why?, etc.

AN ACTIVITY I THINK MIGHT WORK

Ive Never

Level: Intermediate-advanced

Grammar: Present perfect and simple past

Directions: First, do a model round. Instead of using alcohol, you can

use pennies to make this one fun.
Start out by telling the class something you've never done. For
example, "I've never been to India." Anyone who has been to India
must tell the story.
After they tell the story and their classmates ask follow-up questions,
they receive a penny. Play continues to the right as the next person
says, "I've never..." Again, students who have done this receive a
penny.
Once the students have gotten the idea, put them in groups to
continue the activity (you could continue to play as a whole class, but
there's more time for language production if they're in groups).
At the end, see who has the most pennies and joke about this person
being the most experienced.
