A wrong committed against society, as
defined in a statute and punishable by
fines, imprisonment, and, in some
cases, by death

Crimes are generally classified in


one of three ways.
The source of the law regulating the

behavior
The seriousness of the crime
The type of harm

Decisions of a judge where no prior law relating to the

Felonies
A crime that carries the most severe punishment
Ranges from more than one year in prison up to a death

penalty
Examples: Murder, Rape, Robbery

Misdemeanors
A lesser crime such as disorderly conduct, trespass
Punishment is limited to up to one year in jail, a fine or both
Examples: Shoplifting, Possession of less than an ounce of

marijuana

Petty offenses
Considered by many people as not a real crime
Examples: Traffic offenses, Jay walking

There are many different crimes that are considered felonies in most
states. Some common felonies include:
murder,kidnapping,arson,rape,robbery,burglary,embezzlement,
forgery,larceny

There's a wide variety of crimes that are considered misdemeanors in


most states. Some common misdemeanors include:

Public intoxication,trespassing,speeding
Prostitution,vandalism,use of a false ID.

How to Prevent Becoming a Victim of Crime

1.Keep life in perspective.


2.Protect your vulnerability.
3.Carefully chose the company you keep.
4. Avoid allowing strangers into your home or closed living space
5.Spend a little extra money on home security.
6.Be cautious with dangerous objects in your home.
7.Dont be careless with valuables.

9.Take advantage of neighbour-hood watch.
10.Avoid walking alone at night or in potentially unsafe
areas.
11.Break routine as much as possible.
12. Build a reputation of integrity.
13.Avoid false senses of security.

another.
15.Be aware of petty theft opportunities.
