CHATTING...

COMMUNICATION FACILITIES
THROUGH INTERNET: Introduction
to IRC

 Definition
 IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a multi-user, multi-
channel chatting system.
 Imagine sitting in front of your computer and
"talking" through typed messages with either one
person or many other people from all over the
Internet, all in real time!

COMMUNICATION FACILITIES
THROUGH INTERNET: Introduction
to IRC

 IRC is based on a client-server model.

 You run a client program on your own computer
which connects you to a server computer on the
Internet.
 These servers link to many other servers to make up
an IRC network, which transport messages from
one user (client) to another.
 In this manner, people from all over the world can
talk to each other live and simultaneously.

COMMUNICATION FACILITIES
THROUGH INTERNET: Introduction
to IRC

 Once you are set up with a provider and a client, you are in
control.
 Choose a nickname you wish to be known by, then connect to
one of the many different IRC networks catering to different
geographical locations, interests, or philosophies.
 The largest networks have tens of thousands of people online at
any given moment, drawn from an order of magnitude or more
of regular visitors.
 These people create thousands of channels (sometimes
incorrectly called "chat rooms") where people may meet and
mingle.
 You may join these channels and participate in the group
discussion, or you may elect to chat privately with individuals.

MAILING LISTS...

Mukasurat - 7
COMMUNICATION FACILITIES
THROUGH INTERNET: What Are
Mailing Lists?

 Definition

“An electronic list email address that

can be used to send email to each
member on the list.”

Mukasurat - 8
COMMUNICATION FACILITIES
THROUGH INTERNET: What Are
Mailing Lists?

 A mailing list is basically a group of people who

share a common interest (usually this is a large
group).
 It also known as listserv
 The members send messages to the mailing list,
that relate to the common interest, and these
messages are then distributed to everyone on the
the list.
 A variation is to have a mailing list that is out-
going only. Companies use this type to send their
customers newsletters and update information.

VOICE OVER INTERNET PROTOCOL...

Mukasurat - 13

Mukasurat - 14

COMMUNICATION FACILITIES
THROUGH INTERNET: VoIP?

 Telephone companies offload voice calls from

public switched telephone networks (PSTNs) to
voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) networks
because it is cheaper to carry voice traffic over
Internet Protocol (IP) networks than over switched
circuit networks.
 In the future, IP telephony networks are expected
to enable innovative new multimedia services
while working seamlessly with legacy telephone
networks.
 A VoIP network carries voice traffic cheaper than
a switched circuit telephone network because IP
telephony networks make better use of available
bandwidth.

Mukasurat - 16
COMMUNICATION FACILITIES
THROUGH INTERNET: VoIP?

 In a public switched telephone network, for

example, a dedicated 64 kilobits per second (kbps)
end-to-end circuit is allocated for each call.
 In a VoIP network, digitized voice data is highly
compressed and carried in packets over IP
networks.
 Using the same bandwidth, a VoIP network can
carry many times the number of voice calls as a
switched circuit network with better voice quality.
 The savings realized in using VoIP networks are
often passed onto users in the form of lower costs.

COMMUNICATION FACILITIES
THROUGH INTERNET: Buletin Board

• Defintion

“An electronic forum that allows users from all

over the world to participate in a discussion
abaout specific topic.

Mukasurat - 18
Example of Bulletin Board

COMMUNICATION FACILITIES
THROUGH INTERNET: Buletin Board

• Bulletin board or also known as electronic

forum or newsgroup.
• The newsgroup and electronic forum
functioned like a BB(bulletin board) through
which information about events in the area
could be shared by other people.
