Telecommunication & Networking

In Education
Session 2007 / 2008
Semester 2
Internet For Web Based Learning

At the end of this discussion, you’ll get about :

 Basic concept of Web Based Learning (WBL)

 Communication through on-line service :
• Internet Phone – VOIP
• Mailing List & Groups Discussion
• Listserve
• Bulletin Board
• Chat & Chatting
Internet For Web Based Learning

Web Based Learning :

Levels of sophistication of online learning vary.

 A basic online learning program includes the text

and graphics of the course, exercises, testing, and
record keeping, such as test scores and bookmarks.

(text, graphic + basic of database)

Web Based Learning :

Levels of sophistication of online learning vary.

 A sophisticated online learning program includes

animations, simulations, audio and video sequences,
peer and expert discussion groups, online mentoring,
links to material on a corporate intranet or the
Web, and communications with corporate education
records.

(multimedia, heavy database)

Internet For Web Based Learning

Interactivity : WWW

 The web is set up to handle two way communication.

: e-mail forms, take quizzes, or vote.

 It is also possible to set up bulletin boards, chat

rooms, calendars or keep track of where users have
been.

 Problems : standards, platform issues, and browser

incompatibilities, database merging,…

Fun activities :Your Own e-Learning System

 Go to moodle.org
 Download moodle for windows
 Setup and have a fun with your own e-learning
system

IRC : Internet Relay Chat

 Is a multi-user, multi-channel chatting system

based on text.

 Imagine sitting in front of your computer and

"talking" through typed messages with either one
person or many other people from all over the
Internet, all in real time!

What the differences between IRC & Video

Conferencing
Internet For Web Based Learning

IRC : Internet Relay Chat

 IRC is based on a client-server model.

 You run a client program on your own computer
which connects you to a server computer on the
Internet.
Internet For Web Based Learning

IRC : Internet Relay Chat

 These servers link to many other servers to make

up an IRC network, which transport messages from
one user (client) to another.

 In this manner, people from all over the world can

talk to each other live and simultaneously.

IRC : Internet Relay Chat

 Once you are set up with a provider and a client, you

are in control.

 Choose a nickname you wish to be known by, then

connect to one of the many different IRC networks
catering to different geographical locations,
interests, or philosophies.

.
Internet For Web Based Learning

IRC : Internet Relay Chat

 The largest networks have tens of thousands of

people online at any given moment, drawn from an
order of magnitude or more of regular visitors.

 These people create thousands of channels

(sometimes incorrectly called "chat rooms") where
people may meet and mingle.

 You may join these channels and participate in the

group discussion, or you may elect to chat privately
with individuals.

IRC : Just Do IT

 Download MIRC @ www.mirc.com

 Setup and have fun chatting channel

 Ask your demonstrator for more detail how to use

it

Mailing List : Definition

“An electronic list email address that can be

used to send email to each member on the
list.”
Internet For Web Based Learning

Mailing List : Group Discussion

 A mailing list is basically a group of people who

share a common interest (usually this is a large
group).

 The members send messages to the mailing list,

that relate to the common interest, and these
messages are then distributed to everyone on the
list.
Internet For Web Based Learning

Mailing List : Group Discussion

 A variation is to have a mailing list that is out-going

only. Companies use this type to send their
customers newsletters and update information.

ListServ

 An automatic mailing list server developed by Eric

Thomas for BITNET in 1986.

 When e-mail is addressed to a LISTSERV mailing

list, it is automatically broadcast to everyone on the
list.

 The result is similar to a newsgroup or forum,

except that the messages are transmitted as e-mail
and are therefore available only to individuals on
the list.
Internet For Web Based Learning

ListServ

 Although LISTSERV refers to a specific mailing list

server, the term is sometimes used incorrectly to
refer to any mailing list server.

 Another popular mailing list server is Majordomo,

which is freeware.

Bulletin Board

 “An electronic forum that allows users from all over

the world to participate in a discussion about
specific topic.

 An electronic message center. Most bulletin boards

serve specific interest groups.

 They allow you to, review messages left by others,

and leave your own message if you want.
Internet For Web Based Learning

Bulletin Board

 Bulletin board or also known as electronic forum or

newsgroup.

 The newsgroup and electronic forum functioned like

a BB(bulletin board) through which information
about events in the area could be shared by other
people.

V.o.I.P : Definition

 “The technology used to transmit voice

conversations over a data network using the
Internet Protocol. Such data network may be the
Internet or a corporate Intranet”
Internet For Web Based Learning

V.o.I.P

 Voice over Internet Protocol, is a technology that

allows you to make voice calls using a broadband
Internet connection instead of a regular (or analog)
phone line.

 Some VoIP services may only allow you to call other

people using the same service, but others may allow
you to call anyone who has a telephone number -
including local, long distance, mobile, and
international numbers.
Internet For Web Based Learning

V.o.I.P

 Also, while some VoIP services only work over your

computer or a special VoIP phone, other services
allow you to use a traditional phone connected to a
VoIP adapter.

 Example : Yahoo Messenger, Skype®

Internet For Web Based Learning

V.o.I.P

 VoIP is a term used in IP telephony for a set of

facilities for managing the delivery of voice
information using the Internet Protocol (IP).

 In general, this means sending voice information in

digital form in discrete packets rather than in the
traditional circuit-committed protocols of the
public switched telephone network (PSTN)
Internet For Web Based Learning
V.o.I.P
Internet For Web Based Learning

V.o.I.P

 Telephone companies offload voice calls from public

switched telephone networks (PSTNs) to voice-
over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) networks because it
is cheaper to carry voice traffic over Internet
Protocol (IP) networks than over switched circuit
networks (PSTN)
Internet For Web Based Learning

V.o.I.P

 In the future, IP telephony networks are expected

to enable innovative new multimedia services while
working seamlessly with legacy telephone networks.

 A VoIP network carries voice traffic cheaper than a

switched circuit telephone network because IP
telephony networks make better use of available
bandwidth.
Internet For Web Based Learning

V.o.I.P

 In a public switched telephone network, for

example, a dedicated 64 kilobits per second (kbps)
end-to-end circuit is allocated for each call.

 In a VoIP network, digitized voice data is highly

compressed and carried in packets over IP
networks.
Internet For Web Based Learning

V.o.I.P

 Using the same bandwidth, a VoIP network can

carry many times the number of voice calls as a
switched circuit network with better voice quality.

 The savings realized in using VoIP networks are

often passed onto users in the form of lower costs.
