INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING : Industrial engineering is a branch of engineering concerned with

the developmen1t, improvement, implementation and evaluation of
integrated systems of people, money, knowledge, information,
equipment, energy, material and process.

Industrial engineering is also known as operations management,

management science, systems engineering, or manufacturing

engineering; a distinction that seems to depend on the viewpoint or
motives of the user.

It also deals with designing new prototypes to

help save money and make the prototype better.

In lean manufacturing systems, Industrial engineers work

to eliminate wastes of time,
money, materials, energy, and other resources.

The term originally applied to manufacturing, it

has grown to encompass virtually all other
industries and services as well.

Automation

Automation can be defined as technology

involved in automated handling between Machines
and continuous processing at machines

Automation is away for humans to extend the

capability of their tools and machines.

Automation has replaced human effort, eliminates significant

labor costs, and prevents accidents and injuries that might occur.

Automation is the use of control systems (such

as numerical control, programmable logic control,
and other industrial control systems)

The main advantage of automation are:

Replacing human operators in tedious tasks.
Replacing humans in tasks that should be done in dangerous
environments (i.e. fire, space, volcanoes, nuclear facilities,
underwater, etc)
Making tasks that are beyond the human capabilities such as
handling too heavy loads, too large objects, too hot or too cold
substances or the requirement to make things too fast or too slow.

The most basic advantages which we are all aware of are:

-Accuracy
- Speed
- Increased productivity
- Flexibility
Management Benefits
Employee Benefits
Business Benefits

Technology limits. Current technology is unable to

automate all the desired tasks.

o

Unpredictable development costs. The

research and development cost of automating a

process is difficult to predict accurately beforehand.
o

Initial costs are relatively high.

The automation of a plant required a great initial

investment too, although this cost is spread in the

products to be produced.

Human being replacement.

Machines don't move very fast in emergency situations, nor can they

make judgments based on fact, but tempered by human kindness and

understanding.

Automation Techniques:Different types of automation tools exist :ANN - Artificial neural network
DCS - Distributed Control System
HMI - Human Machine Interface
SCADA - Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition
PLC - Programmable Logic Controller
PAC - Programmable Automation Controller
Instrumentation
Motion control
Robotics

ROBOTICS

One of
Robotics.

the best automation techniques is

World is leading a technology which

ease human life beyond imagination.
Some of the areas where robotics is present
are: industrial manufacturing.

Robots are basically used in those tasks which are sometimes

referred to as the 3-Ds, namely: Dull, Dirty and Dangerous.

Automation

in
Manufacturing :

Computer-integrated
manufacturing(CIM):
Is the computerized integration
of all aspects of design, planning,
manufacturing, distribution, and
management.
Numerical

Control(NC):
Capability of flexibility of
operations, and ease of making
different parts with lower operator
skill.

Manufacturing of steel bridges, cutting steel

FUTURE SCOPE
Robot Taxi.
Automated Vehicles.
Space Robots.
Fully Automated Manufacturing & Assembly
Lines

There are many evolutions occurred in Automation & today

we are using most advanced equipped robots that can
perform multiple functions.
There are many applications of robots. Robots are
used in Industrial, Medical, Educational, Research & even in
domestic fields and In situation where its hazardous, time
consuming for human being, Robots are inevitable.
So, they has indivisible role in our life.
