Mathematics Education Curriculum

Primary Mathematics Curriculum (4 hours)

KBSR Curriculum Specifications
for Year 1 to Year 6 (3 hours)
KBSM (3 hours)

Introduction
Mathematics curriculum has been designed
to provide mathematical knowledge and
skills to pupils from various backgrounds
and levels of ability
Acquisition of these skills will help them in
their careers, and in the process, benefit the
society and country
Primary mathematics curriculum in
Malaysia (KBSR) emphasizes the
acquisition of basic mathematical concepts
and skills

CONTENT ORGANISATION
4 MAIN AREAS

NUMBERS
MEASURES
SHAPES &
SPACE

STATISTICS

TOPICS
Whole Numbers;
Money ; Fractions;
Decimals; Percentage
Time; Length; Mass;
Volume of Liquid
2-dimensional shapes;
3-dimensional shapes;
Perimeter & area
Average; Data
Handling &
Representation

AIMS

To build pupils understanding of number

concepts and their basic skills in
computation that they can apply in their
daily routines effectively & responsibly in
keeping with the aspirations of a developed
society & nation, and at the same time to
use this knowledge to further their studies

OBJECTIVES

Know & understand mathematical concepts,

definition, rules, principles related to numbers,
operations, space, measures & handling data
Master basic operations of mathematics
Master the skills of combined operations
Master basic mathematical skills - making
estimates & approximates, measuring, handling
data & representing information in the form of
graphs & charts
Use mathematical skills & knowledge to solve
problems in everyday life effectively &
responsibly

OBJECTIVES (continued)

Use the language of mathematics correctly

Use suitable technology in concept building,
acquiring mathematical skills & solving
problems
Apply the knowledge of mathematics
systematically, heuristically, accurately &
carefully
Participate in activities related to mathematics
Appreciate the importance & beauty of
mathematics

EMPHASES IN T&L

PROBLEM SOLVING IN
MATHEMATICS
COMMUNICATION IN
MATHEMATICS
MATHEMATICAL REASONING
MATHEMATICAL CONNECTIONS
APPLICATION OF TECHNOLOGY

PROBLEM SOLVING IN
MATHEMATICS
Dominant element in the mathematics
curriculum
Polyas Model 4 step algorithm
Strategies:
Try a simpler case; Trial & improvement;
Draw a diagram; Identifying patterns &
sequences; Make a table/chart/list;
Simulation; Make analogy; Working
backwards

COMMUNICATION IN
MATHEMATICS

One way to share ideas and clarify understandings

of mathematics
Talking & questioning mathematical ideas can
be reflected upon, discussed & modified
Communication skills in mathematics
Read & understand problem, interpret diagrams &
graphs, use correct & concise mathematical terms
Pupil collects data or information & rearranges the
relationship between ideas & concepts

COMMUNICATION IN
Using mathematical knowledge in making
MATHEMATICS

decisions
Makes observation, analyzes it, interprets &
synthesize the data into tables and graphs
Oral communication teacher-pupil; pupil-pupil
& pupil-object
Develop a language for expressing mathematical
ideas
Written communication results of discussions &
brainstorming activities

COMMUNICATION IN
Representation
MATHEMATICS

Process of analyzing a mathematical problem and

interpreting it from one mode to another
Enables pupils to find relationship between
mathematical ideas that are informal, intuitive &
abstract using their everyday language
Verbal, pictorial, symbolic (arithmetic &
algebraic)

MATHEMATICAL
Logical reasoning or REASONING
thinking

Basis for understanding & solving

mathematical problems
Predicting & guessing in the process of
seeking solutions
Investigate their predictions or guesses by
using concrete materials or calculators
Evaluate predictions
Mathematical arguments

MATHEMATICAL CONNECTIONS

Link conceptual to procedural knowledge

Relate topics in Mathematics with other learning
areas in general
By making connections, pupils are able to see
Mathematics as an integrated whole rather than a
jumble of unconnected ideas
Problem-oriented classrooms, having pupils to
communicate, reason & present their thinking
Conscious in the application of mathematics
Connection between real life situations and the
curriculum

APPLICATION OF TECHNOLOGY

Understand mathematical concepts

meaningfully and in depth
Explore mathematical concepts
Calculators, computers, softwares, websites,
learning packages
Self-access learning
Stimulate pupils interests & responsibility
in learning mathematics
Upgrade pedagogical skills in the T&L of
Mathematics

EMPHASES IN T&L

PROBLEM SOLVING IN MATHEMATICS

skills & strategies
COMMUNICATION IN MATHEMATICS
oral: story-telling, Q&A sessions, discussion &
presentations
written: exercises, scrap books, folios, projects, tests
MATHEMATICAL REASONING
logical thinking
MATHEMATICAL CONNECTIONS
conceptual to procedural knowledge; between different
learning areas; with real life situations
APPLICATION OF TECHNOLOGY
calculators, computers, software, web sites in the internet

APPROACHES IN T & L

Pupil-centered learning
Use of relevant, suitable & effective teaching
materials in forming mathematical concepts,
hence help pupils gain experience, construct
abstract ideas, build self confidence, encourage
independence & inculcate cooperation
Assist pupils in having positive attitudes
Intrinsic mathematical values of exactness &
systematic
Good moral values & patriotism
Learning ability & styles of learning

APPROACHES IN T & L

Cooperative learning
Contextual learning
Mastery learning
Constructivism
Enquiry-discovery
Future study

ASSESSMENT

Formative assessment to determine the

effectiveness of T&L
Carried out continuously as part of the classroom
activities
Multiple assessment techniques
Oral & written
Observations, open-ended questions, interviews &
assignments
Rectify pupils misconceptions & weaknesses
Take subsequent effective measures in conducting
remedial and enrichment activities to upgrade
pupils performance

ASSIGNMENT

make an analysis on the Learning Outcomes
in the topic from Year 1 to Year 6
Use graphic organizers to summarize the
Learning Outcomes
Whole Numbers; Addition; Subtraction;
Multiplication; Division; Money; Fractions;
Decimals & Percentage; Time; Length; Mass;
