Drainage

Types of Drainage Systems

Various types of drainage systems are available and the main types are briefly
described as follows:

Kerbs and Gullies

Road surface drainage by kerbs and gullies is commonly used in urban
areas and in rural embankment conditions. Surface water flows over the
pavement to a kerb at the edge of the road and is collected in gullies which
are connected to longitudinal carrier drains set within the road verge.

Example
Assumption

Design return period = 10 years or 50 years

Intensity, i = 4.2 in/hr for return period of 20 years for duration of 60 minutes
Manning Coeff., n = 0.015
Runoff Coeff., C = 0.65 for residential area of 8-12 houses per acres
Storage Coeff., Cs = 0.70 [ Cs = 2tc / (2tc + td) ]
Area = 9 acres

Q = C xCs x i x A

Step 1-Catchment capacity

Q = Cs x C x i x A

Where
Q : catchment capacity (cusec)
Cs : storage coefficient
C : Runoff coefficient
i: Rainfall Intensity (50 years return period)
A : Catchment area ( in acre)

Step-2
Estimated catchment capacity
Q = Cs x C x i x A = 22.113 Cusec

Area = 9 acres

Step 3
Design size of U-drain or earth drain
Q =(1.49A x R2/3S1/2 ) /n
Where
Q is flow in cu.ft.per sec
n is manning roughness coefficient
A is cross sectional of drain in feet
S is slope in ft/ft
(Provide drain >>>>>> width = 1.25 ft , height = 4.0 ft.
Check OK or NG against Q = 22.113 cusec)

Details calculation
Provide drain >>>>>> width = 1.25 ft , height = 4.0 ft.
Check OK or NG against Q = 22.113 cusec)
A = 5.0 sq.ft
P = (4 + 4 + 1.25) = 9.25 ft
R = A / P = 5 / 9.25 = 0.54 ft
S = 1/300 (assume)
Qd = [1.49 x 5 x 0.542/3 x (1/300)1/2 ] / 0.015
= 19.01 < Q
(Note : Q = 22.113)

MS

A work method statement, sometimes called a "safe system of work", is a

document that details the way a work task or process is to be completed.
The method statement should outline the hazards involved and include a
step by step guide on how to do the job safely. The method statement must
also detail which control measures have been introduced to ensure the
safety of anyone who is affected by the task or process.
Method Statements are frequently requested as part of a tender process
which allows the company to gain an insight into your organisation and the
way it operates. They allow your company to demonstrate how it can
provide goods and services in a safe and high quality manner.
Method statements should be written by a competent person familiar with
the work processes, health and safety control measures and the
requirements of a Method Statement. It should contain information
concerning the order and method of construction with reference to specific
work procedures. One some sites, method statements are a contractual
requirement, requiring submission to the main contractor, client or engineer
for approval prior to the commencement of ..
