Pronunciation

Have you ever wondered when looking


in a dictionary what the funny little
symbols that appear next to the words
mean? They are phonetic symbols, a
guide to pronunciation, however you
need to know the sound associated
with the symbols in order to build up
the sound of the word.

Rules based on Plural


Voiceless Sounds

Plural (s) is pronounced as either s or z


depending upon the availability.
If the previous sound is voiceless, s is
pronounced. e.g. books, looks, racks, kids
etc.
If the prev. sound is voiced, z is
pronounced. For e.g. buses, shelves, shoes,
keys etc.

Whenever in a word, ed appears, t or d


sound comes in the end depending upon
the previous sounds:
If the previous sound is voiceless, t is
pronounced. For e.g. laughed, clapped,
baked etc.
If the previous sound is voiced, d is
pronounced. For e.g. wanted, boiled, crafted
etc.

Weak

Pronunciation : As a general rule, we use the


weak pronunciation with words that start with a
consonant.
It rhymes with "duh" and if you say "mother" it rhymes
with the "mo" and the "ther".
e.g. "The cat sat on the mat."

There are two ways to pronounce


"the"
Strong Pronunciation : We use the
strong pronunciation with words that start
with a vowel or sound as if they do.
We also use the strong 'the' when we want
to stress the word, regardless of whether it
begins with a vowel or a consonant.
For e.g. - "I spoke to Kevin Costner the other
day."
"NottheKevin Costner! The one who
starred in Robin Hood?"

Pronunciation
r is never pronounced if it comes in the
last.
r is never pronounced if it is preceded by a
vowel and followed by a consonant.
For e.g. carpenter, scorpion etc.
Note: the vowel preceded by r in any word is
pronounced longer.
No vowel is pronounced if it happens to
appear in a suffix. For e.g. beautiful,
careless etc.
