Question 3: What kind of institution might

distribute your media product and why?

By: Rhianna

WHAT IS A DISTRIBUTOR?
A distributor is an organisation which is paid by the film producers to
deal with the theatrical releases of a film in a particular country as well
as the marketing and circulation of films for home-viewing (e.g. DVD,
TV, download, and streaming sites such as Netflix or Amazon Prime.)
Distribution is an important stage in the production of a film, because
its the bit which will make the company their money and get the film to
be noticed and liked. Production companies need to be careful when
choosing the correct distribution company for their film because if they
choose one which for example isnt well suited to their film, the
distribution might not be a success and therefore leave the company
with no money.

WHAT FILM DISTRIBUTOR IS

RIGHT FOR US?
To try and decide which company would be best suited to our horror
genre of film, we looked into the distribution companies of the films
that we had previously been researching during the research stages of
our production. The distributor for Sinister was Icon Productions,
Insidious was FilmDistrict, The Conjuring was Warner Bros
Entertainment and Devils Due was 20th Century Fox. After doing
this, we needed to narrow the companies down into which ones would
be practical for our film, as we would rather sign with a company which
is based in the UK rather than America.

OUR DECISION:
After narrowing down our choices, the company in which we have
decided would be best to distribute our film is 20th Century Fox
because they are a British company, who have a massive fan base for
lots of different genres of film, (including horror) so therefore this
company would know exactly how to market our film.

OUR PRODUCTION COMPANY:

We came up with our production company Rare Studios by
combining our two names. (Rowen Ellis & Rhianna Robinson). We
thought this was quite original and simple but given the word Rare,
quite different. Our production company would be for the production
of only the horror genre, as I think the logo is quite well suited to that,
and it also means we would have a very precise fan base, who would
only be fans purely for the horror aspect.

HOW ELSE MIGHT YOUR WORK BE

DISTRIBUTED?

We would like our film to be brought out on DVD, but given

that there has been a rapid increase in online streaming and
downloading in the past few years, we would also like it to be
available for download and streaming on websites such as
Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video for the younger
generations of people, who happen to also be our target
audience.
