Project: Materials Choice Awards

Purpose: To familiarize middle school and


high school students with the materials
profession and show the importance of
materials in cool products or applications.
Value to ASM: Increase interest in materials
among youth and promote ASM International
& ASM MEF.

First round of competition will include a written


essay, judged by the ASM SBoTs.
Top 10 teams in each tier will advance to
Peoples Choice round
Judging Criteria for written/essay

Novelty of material chosen and its
applications
Quality of writing
Justification for choosing material

Materials Choice Awards - Round 2


Top 10 teams will have their submissions
posted to ASM Facebook and Instagram
pages.
The 3 teams in each tier (middle school and
high school) with most number of likes
(combined for Facebook and Instagram) will
advance to the finals.

Top 6 finalists from each tier will compete in
3 minute elevator pitch video presentation
about their nomination of coolest materials
application.
Videos will be shown at MS&T for final
judging.
Judges include: 3-ASM SBoTs and 2-MEF
Board members.

Materials Choice Awards - Prizes


The top score in the video presentation for each
tier will receive a monetary prize.
Middle School Tier: (1) $ 1000
High School Tier: (1) $ 1000
Money can be distributed between winning team
and/or gifted to classroom for classroom supplies
related to education in materials science.
Need a way to ensure money is being distributed as
ASM intends it to be (money is not being pocketed by
teacher or used for general classroom supplies such
as staplers)

JANUARY 15, 2016: Notify top ten teams from essay
portion
FEBRUARY 5, 2016: Submit picture and comment

Load submissions onto Facebook and Instagram page


Keep track of number of likes for each submission
MARCH 15, 2016: Notify top 3 teams
MAY 1, 2016: Submit video
AT MS&T 16: Announce winners
