SAIC Overview
SAIC = Single Antenna Interference Cancellation
Generic term for a receiver algorithm utilising one
antenna (in a handset)
Nokias phase 1 SAIC is a proprietary algorithm
DARP = Downlink Advanced Receiver Performance
3GPP standardized feature for 2G utilising SAIC and
uplink signalling
Introduced in Rel-6 as release independent feature
Can be introduced to terminals supporting earlier 3GPP
releases

Nokias phase 2 SAIC is 3GPP compliant DARP feature

SAIC
Benefits
SAIC will improve call quality (better FER) at low SAIC terminal penetration rate
(specially when DL Power Control is not used)
When DL PC is used, the transmission power for SAIC terminals can be reduced
Overall DL interference in network is decreased
Call quality of legacy terminals is improved
SAIC terminals perform in quality conditions that would not be good enough for
legacy terminals, i.e. DL Power Control is not any more usable nor are the
quality based handovers possible
When the terminal penetration rates grow, SAIC starts to provide system
capacity gain
The spectral efficiency can be improved by increasing the frequency reuse (with DL
PC) in DL interference limited network
Simulated capacity gain with full SAIC penetration is 50-60 %

This strategy is chosen when
Rx quality needs to be improved.

Nokia SAIC capable terminals

Phase 1: Nokia proprietary SAIC

First products in 4Q 2004
Since then, several products in all
segments
Phase 1 was introduced already before
3GPP specifications, as capacity gain
depends largely on SAIC penetration.

SAIC in Networks Support in S12

SAIC is terminal algorithm, however there is also a need for
network support for SAIC terminals
Signaling and statistics support in networks enable operators
to optimize and follow up behavior of SAIC mobiles
This is valid for situation, where high SAIC penetration has been
achieved

Statistics for SAIC mobiles (84 counters)

DFCA SAIC measurement (77 counters)

SAIC DL C/I offset (SCIO) defines how much lower downlink C/I
values can be used for SAIC calls than for non-SAIC calls in
DFCA TCH allocation

elements

The best system performance is achieved with SAIC when

the uplink and downlink interference cancellation is balanced
This can be accomplished by using diversity techniques, such
as Interference Rejection Combining (IRC) and Space Time
Interference Rejection Combining (ST-IRC), in the uplink (in the
BTS).
