magnitude of the problems incidence/prevalence

INTERACTION WITH OTHER PROFESSIONAL

What is a profession ?

1.
2.

Medicine is not, of course, the oldest profession.

There is no very precise meaning of the term profession
Sometime it is used in distinction to a craft (such as
furniture making), in distinguishing between amateur and
professional (basketball)
Some features that are typical of profession:
A good commitment to serve the public and provide an
important public service.
A great deal of generalized and systematized knowledge
is required in order to practice the specific profession.
Becoming professional often requires extensive training,
usually in the form of higher degree.

3. The standards in carrying out professional work are set

by the profession and there is an important element of
self regulation.
These standards normally include ethical components. Increasingly,
at least in the UK, there is state regulation in addition to self
regulation.

4. A certification or licensing procedure that determines

who can be part or become a member of the specific
profession.
The professions have a monopoly on being able
(lawfully) to carry out the work of that profession.
5. The existence of a professional body that takes on a
number of these aspects of a profession
For example: setting professional standards; overseeing
disciplinary mechanisms to ensure that the professional
maintains those standards; determining the content for
training to become professional, and carrying out a
certification or licensing procedure.

Some features typical of professions are the basic of the

professionalism can not work alone, but may have to
work together with other professional

Example :
Case Unfortunately, Nicole's test is positive for
cancer. She is saddened by this information, and
struggles along depression for a few weeks. The
genetic counselor points out that she ought to feel
empowered by the knowledge, as there are
precautionary measures she can take. Nicole tells
Shella (her sister), that this does not mean that
Shella will necessarily carry the genetic mutation.
Shella has four children all under the age of ten. I
just want to live my life ..?
This case is genetic problem

WHAT DO YOU THINK ?

Who ought to have access to genetic information
about particular patient ?
FAMILY MEMBERS ?
EMPLOYERS ?
INSURERS ?
POLICE AND YUDICIARY ?
PUBLIC HEALTH REGISTERIES?
RELIGIONS
ECONOMIST, etc

1. FAMILY MEMBERS
Who know the disease ?
Information can be significant to place a moral
imperative on the individual to disclose information,
only if :
* risks of not doing so- - - - are significant
* potential recipient (s) wish (es)
to know the information
* lack of knowledge: in case where the genetically
linked illness is likely to emerge, such as
Huntingtons chorea or muscular dystrophy, there
can be significant harm to family members
associated with their lack of knowledge.

2. EMPLOYERS
For employers and insurers the costs of ill health
related to genetic conditions can be great.

We can see how it would be in their interest to know

who has predisposition to the conditions in order to
keep the cost of illness low.
This is the sort of discrimination most people are
afraid will tarnish the excellent help and care genetic
information can provide.
As genetic testing becomes more and more
advanced, the likely causes of death of most people
will eventually be detectable, making employment
and insurance impossible for anyone.

3. The Police or Judiciary

The next category of interest is the police or judiciary.
Here the genetic information of a person could be sought to
ensure public safety or to help solving crimes.
It is not clear to what extent (How far) a person ought to be
subjected to invasive medical test in police investigation
Note:

The interaction to other professional may be:

Lawyer included: UUPK
Malpractice
Negligence
Journalist Information : Epidemiology (Birds flu)
etc

Economist : Pharmaco economics

Insurance insurers, insurance claim

This topic introduces a number of significant
issues related to patient care and the
responsibilities conferred upon doctors. Doctors
have not only task in their internal
professionalism, but would reach other
professionalism and know the interaction among
the professionalisms

maybe you can find another cases ?
