Introduction
Synthetic rubber, invariably apolymer, is any
type of artificialelastomer ,mainly synthesised
from petroleum byproducts.
Synthetic elastomers are produced on an
industrial scale in either solution or emulsion
polymerization methods. Polymers made in
solution generally have more linear molecules
(that is, less branching of side chains from the
main polymer chain), and they also have a
narrower distribution of molecular weight and
flow more easily. In addition, the placement of the
monomer units in the polymer molecule can be
controlled more precisely when polymerization is
conducted in solution.
Chemical Reaction
The most prevalent synthetic rubbers
arestyrene-butadiene rubbers(SBR) derived
from
thecopolymerization
ofstyreneand
butadiene. Other synthetic rubbers are
prepared
fromisoprene(methylbutadiene),chloroprene(chloro,-butadiene),
and isobutylene (methylpropene) with a small
percentage of isoprene forcross-linking.
These and other monomers can be mixed in
various proportions to becopolymerized to
produce products with a range of physical,
mechanical, and chemical properties. The
monomers can be produced pure and the
addition of impurities or additives can be
