The Greatest Threat to spanish rule lay

among indios themselves who were
overwhelmingly superior in numbers to the
spaniards. There were over 200 revolts and
uprisings which took place between 1565
and 1896 and these movements were
attempts by the people to regain freedom.
The revolts also resentment to the
oppression and imposition by the colinzeres
including forced labor,bandala and
repartimeinto

Some revolts were personally motivated by

personal grievances.others were motivated
by a desire to return to the old native religion
and prehispanic practices.
Spain,however,managed to maintain its rule
in the country despite the small number of
spaniards in the islands by exploiting the
divisions in colonial society and by using
one sector of the native population against
other the lack of identity allowed spanish

was an uprising in 1574 against Spanish

colonial rule led by Lakandula and Rajah
Soliman in Tondo Manila. The revolt
occurred in the same year as the Chinese
pirate Limahong attacked the palisaded yet
poorly defended enclosure of Intramuros.
This Revolt was caused by losing Soliman
and Lakandula's kingdom when they were
defeated by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi to
accept the Spanish sovereignty on the
promise that they would be well-treated by
the Spaniards and would still retain some of
their royal and political powers.

The Secularization Issue

>> 0

>>

>>

>>

>>

>>

Two kinds of priests served the

Catholic Church in the Philippines. These
were the regulars and the seculars. Regular
priests belonged to religious orders. Their
main task was to spread Christianity.
Examples were the Franciscans,
Recollects, Dominicans, and Augustinians.
Secular priests did not belong to any
religious order. They were trained
specifically to run the parishes and were
under the supervision of the bishops.

In 1774, Archbishop Basilio Santa Justa

decided to uphold the dioceses authority
over the parishes and accepted the
resignations of the regular priests. He
assigned secular priests to take their place.
Since there were not enough seculars to fill
all the vacancies the Archbishop hastened
the ordination of Filipino seculars.

A royal decree was also issued on

November 9, 1774, which provided for the
secularization of all parishes or the transfer
of parochial administration from the regular
friars to the secular priests.
The regulars resented the move because
they considered the Filipinos unfit for the
priesthood. Among other reasons they cited
the Filipinos brown skin, lack of education,
and inadequate experience.

Opposition to reduccion
(reduccion system)

>> 0

>>

>>

>>

>>

>>

Other revolts were caused by the refusal of

the natives to be reduced especially to be
uprooted from their ancestral lands to live in
the newly established pueblos.among them
were the Gaddangs of Cagayan who
refused ressetlement in 1622-1623. and the
isnegs in 1625. the spaniards resorted to
keeping the families the chiefs hostage to
ensure the payment to tribute .the natives
then fled to the surronding mountains

The Spanish authorities enticed the natives

to live near the churches, or within hearing
distance of church bells (in Spanish: bajo de
la campana). Looking back, Christianity was
introduced based on the Filipino natives'
familiarity in animist belief. The faces of the
anito and diwata were changed to that of the
great saints.
