GSMA-WBA joint taskforce

The joint GSMA-WBA task-force (JTF) wrap-up the Phase 2 of the

work on Signaling Optimization and Session Continuity by July 2013

The joint TF agreed to re-start the work once members propose a

topic and a leadership team

A call for topics was send to all JTF members

3 topics were identified:

1. Interworking between Diameter and Radius
2. Device Testing
3. ANDSF Policy
4. Wi-Fi Calling

For each topic was defined a priority, the scope, lead team and next
steps

Topic 1
Interworking between Diameter and Radius
Scope:
The interoperability requirement between diameter and Radius was identified in
the 1st phase of the TF but was never addressed.
Define an implementation of RADIUS/Diameter interworking between 3GPP and
Wi-Fi networks that allows for support of data offload and Services over IMS over
Wi-Fi (Initially voice and SMS) to an industry agreed and supported solution.
Start by defining the problem and analyze the work done by 3GPP, GSMA and
WBA.
Identify gaps in the specifications/standards and look for solutions (and share
with other bodies).

The WBA roaming process is summarized under the term WRIX (Wireless Roaming
Intermediary Exchange) and consists of the following functional blocks:

WRIX-d and WRIX-f: The WRIX

clearing specification covers WRIXd and WRIX-f including the XMLbased data format: UDR (Usage
Detail Record) for data clearing and
SFD (Summary Financial Data) for
financial clearing.

WRIX-L: Location Feed Format

and File exchange Standard
WRIX-i specification includes
descriptions and definitions of the
WRIX compliant Network, RADIUS
interface, VPN connections, WLAN
session mediation, UDR creation
and service levels.

WRIX-i
WRIX-i describes the requirements of the IP connections between the VSP and
the HSP that supports the authentication and accounting processes based on
the RADIUS protocols.
WRIX-i defines a set of standard mediation rules with which all WBA members
must comply in the determination of valid RADIUS session definitions, including:
Event Sequence
Session Definition
Session Mediation
Usage Detail Record (UDR) Generation
WRIX-i supports EAP authentication providing the transport and indicating which
radius attributes to use . WRIX-i still acts as a proxy between a visited and a
home network. This specification recommends Network operators support the
following EAP methods: EAP-SIM, EAP-AKA, EAP-TLS, and EAP-TTLS

WRIX-L
In order to provide a user-friendly and supportable service, Home
Service Providers require accurate information about the hotspots in
their Wi-Fi roaming solution.
The WRIX Location Feed Format & File Exchange Specification
(WRIX-L) establishes the framework for the consistent definition and
description of hotspots and the process by which the information is
exchanged between Home Service Providers and their Wi-Fi
roaming partners.
The WRIX-L specification includes a combination of mandatory and
optional fields which, at a minimum, identify the Service Set Identifier
(SSID), supplier, geographic location, venue type and technical
access requirements (e.g. security parameters) of an individual
hotspot.

Interoperability Compliancy Program

Description
The ICP objective is to facilitate and simplify
the growth of Carrier Wi-Fi Roaming by
creating a:
State-of-the-art network benchmark
Streamline technical/commercial
information exchange
Enable fast and efficient technical
integrations
Its a certification program based on a carrier
self-assessment analysis where 48
requirements are validated (both technically
and commercially).
Its executed on a dynamic basis with the
exchange of information between WBA and
the carrier.

3GPP WLAN interworking architecture model

For supporting WLAN interworking the STa/Swa has been extending with 3GPP
specific information for mobility negotiation, transport APN, etc
An example of information on STa as defined in TS 29.273 is reported in the
following table

the above information is supposed to be sent by WLAN network to 3GPP AAA

Server in non roaming or to 3GPP AAA proxy for roaming
Accounting: for EPC routed traffic (s2a and s2b) 3GPP assumed that accounting
is performed only in 3GPP network and not in WLAN

Guidelines Document (I)
RADIUS to Diameter Interworking
Gaps in specification: Wi-Fi networks almost exclusively use RADIUS
for AAA. However 3GPP has specified the use of Diameter in Release
6 and later. Some 3GPP specified attributes are only available in
Diameter and no RADIUS equivalent. Currently no specification exists
to manage this difference of usage in RADIUS and Diameter.
Gaps in test: No tests have been specified to test for conversion of
Diameter only attributes to RADIUS based attributes. The industry
needs to define solutions
Time frame considerations: This gap needs to be addressed in the
short to medium term as operators begin to support 3GPP offload to
Wi-Fi networks and increasing 3GPP operators deploy Diameter in their
networks.

Guidelines Document (II)
RADIUS Attributes
Gap in specifications: none
Gap in test: There is no certification to validate that CWLAN equipment, including
devices, generates and handles RADIUS attributes correctly.
Time frame considerations: This is an issue in the market today.
GTP Interface for 3GPP interworking
Gap in specification: The 3GPP interworking scenario describe in section 5.5.
includes the s2a based solution which foresees the usage of
s2a reference point based on GTP as roaming interface
between visited operator deploying CWLAN and home
operator with 3GPP EPC. This scenario is not currently
foreseen in any WLAN roaming guideline in WBA or GSMA.
Gap in test: The test of GTP as roaming interface should be considered for
potential phase of NHG trial in case of support of s2a based 3GPP
interworking scenario.
Time frame consideration: This gap needs to be addressed in the medium term.
