CREATING COMPETENT

EMPLOYEES
What is the meaning of this course?
THE OBJECTIVES OF THE
COURSE
To help the students understand the deeper
meanings of competencies both in the
generic sense and in the industry-specific
senses
To have insights into different types of
organisations and different types of
businesses in terms of Vision, Mission,
Strategies, Structures and Job Profiles
To use those insights to arrive at an
understanding of the specific competencies
relevant to specific businesses

GENERIC COMPETENCIES
What does it mean? Something ingrained as
skills/abilities/knowledge? How did that
ingraining take place? The debate about
inherited vs. acquired/learnt
Competency is a gestalt term which covers all
abilities, skills, knowledge, perspectives etc.
and yet is greater than any one of them
individually
GENERIC COMPETENCIES
In a way it is connected with the identity of a
person- or more appropriately is a part of
ones identity
What is Identity? One’s self image, self ideal,
role model, world view, the feelings about the
self, the meaning one has given to life etc.
How does the identity of an individual develop
or evolve?
ERIK ERIKSON MODEL &
OTHERS
Erikson’s Eight Stages of Man
The influence of the mode of conception on the
eventual identity of an individual- from
Samkhya philosophy- conceived in love, lust
or a sense of duty- a typical brilliant Indian
insight with no backing from documented
research
The influence of the mother’s life style while
the foetus is in the womb- the American
researches
The late Dr Pulin Garg’s theory of being
received at birth in love, hostility or
ERIKSON MODEL
First Year- the stage of Trust vs. Mistrust
2 to 4 years- the stage of Autonomy vs. Shame
& Doubt
4 to 6/7 years- the stage of Initiative vs. Guilt
School Age- the stage of Competency &
Industry vs. Inferiority
Adolescence- a second birth almost- what
happens in adolescence depend on the
legaces of the earlier stages
ERIKSON MODEL
Adolescence: An Overcrystallized Identity vs.
Open & Flexible Identity vs. Diffused Identity
The first one leads to one’s taking on oversize
roles
The second one leads to creative role making
The third one leads to Role Confusion
This is the stage for peer pressures, search for
heroes/role models, search for an ideological
integration of the world
ERIKSON MODEL
Young Adulthood- the stage of Intimacy vs.
Isolation & Creativity vs. Imitation
Middle Age- the stage for Generativity vs.
Stagnation- leadership, philosophy,
literary/artistic pursuits, religion in a positive
sense etc
Old Age- Integrity & Wisdom vs. Despair
COMPETENCIES-GENERIC
VS. SPECIFIC
Generic Competences are the foundation for
specific competencies- if the former is weak
no amount of effort will build an outstanding
specific competency
Even a strong Generic Competency left to itself
will tend to become abstract and not have
any concrete manifestation
COMPETENCIES-GENERIC
VS. SPECIFIC
Examples: strong skills in Spoken English does
not always translate into oratorical,
conversational skills, presentation skills etc.
for which one requires specific training
Strong skills in written English require further
training in skilful report writing
Strong mathematical skills hav to be refined
into research methods using statistical tools
