the research topic name is proposed Effects of Low Temperature on JIC Testing
.
a)

Analyze all the tests according to the standard, so that the valid tests could be used as the
control for the alternative analysis methods(ASTM E 1820 test procedure).

b) Analyze the effects of low temperature on crack growth of the specimen.

c) Find CTOD( Crack tip opening Displacement), by using its relation with J Integral
d) Application of various analysis method and comparison of it to control sets to evaluate the
accuracy of each.
e) Preparation of matlab program for the baseline analyses required as per ASTM E 1820
procedure.

Title
Determination of the fracture
toughness of two C-Mn steels for
different temperatures and loading
rates

Description
An inexpensive sidegrooved precracked Charpy-V-notch
technique for measuring the fracture toughness of
material at crack initiation. Critical values of the J-integral
were determined at different temperatures and different
rates of loading. Results for two steels (SA-106B and SA516 Gr. 70) show clearly that the addition of precracks
and side grooves to small-size specimens allow a fracture
toughness to be determined which proves highly
comparable with that obtained by other standard
methods.
JIc was adopted first by ASTM E115282 and then by

Prediction of temperature and pre The test results revealed that temperature significantly
straining effects on fracture toughness influenced the fracture toughness of structural steel and
of high-strength structural steel by the that fracture toughness was significantly reduced with

Fracture The temperature ranging from -IS'C to 600'C is the upper

shelf region of ductile-brittle transition temperature, and
in this temperature range, fracture toughness JIC values
decreased with increasing temperature. The ductile
brittle transition temperature of the material may be
around -30C. In the region near -30'C, the tendency of
JIC to decrease with decreasing temperature was
significant.

This test method covers procedures and guidelines for

the determination of fracture toughness of metallic
materials using the following parameters: K, J, and CTOD
(d). Toughness can be measured in the R-curve format or
as a point value. The fracture toughness determined in
accordance with this test method is for the opening mode
(Mode I) of loading.

Fracture and strength properties of As cryogenic structures become larger and magnetic
selected austenitic stainless steels at fields more intense, materials with higher strengths than
cryogenic
the widely used alloy AISI 304 are necessary.

Outcomes
Effects of Low Temperature on JIC Testing
