Presentation Roadmap
1. Define the Goal: What does bikefriendly mean?
2. What policies get us there?
3. Understanding those policies.

The Goal: Bike-Friendly

Communities

How do we define that?

The Goal: Bike-Friendly

Communities

Ask 10 bicyclists, get 10 different answers.

Communities

SAFE + POPULAR

#1. Vision Zero

Take steps to eliminate all roadway deaths

and serious injuries within a defined time
period.

#2. TRULY Complete Streets

Design streets and public spaces to meet

the needs of users of all ages and abilities.
Analyze who is using the street or space and
who is not, and intentionally overcome
barriers limiting those who are not.

#3. Green Lanes & #4. Trail

Corridors

Protected infrastructure that eliminates

mixing with automobiles provides both
actual and perceived safety.
People need to feel safe as well as be safe.

#5. Access to Justice

Ensure that laws and policies protect a

person who bikes, and that auto-centric
biases are examined and corrected.

Making a community bike-friendly is more

than an infrastructure issue.
It requires more than bike lanes. More than
bikesharing. More than a map.

Making a community bike-friendly is a

comprehensive public policy undertaking.
But the component policies exist and have
been implemented and tested.
