Setting S.M.A.R.T.

Business
Goals
SMART
 S - specific, significant, stretching
 M - measurable, meaningful, motivational

 A - agreed upon, attainable, achievable,

acceptable, action-oriented
 R - realistic, relevant, reasonable, rewarding,

results-oriented
 T - time-based, timely, tangible, trackable

NB When you next run a project take a moment

to consider whether your goals are SMART
goals.
goals
SMART Goal…Specific
 Goals must be clear and
unambiguous; vagaries and
platitudes have no place in goal
setting.
 When goals are specific, they
communicate exactly what is
expected, when, and how much.
SMART Goal…Specific
 Focus creates a powerful force: goal
power
 The more focused your energies, the
more power you generate.

NB – too many goals dilute focus.

Optimal 2-3 Goals per unit at any one
time!
SMART Goal…Measurable
Track team progress
Help keep the team motivated.

NB - A Goal without a measurable

outcome is like a sports competition
without a scoreboard or scorekeeper!
SMART Goal…Attainable & Agreed Upon

 Goals must be achievable and attainable by

all employees.
 The best goals require employees to stretch

a bit to achieve them, but they aren't

extreme.
 Goals that are set too high or too low

become meaningless, and employees

naturally come to ignore them.
NB Supervisors and managers must work with
their employees to set goals!
SMART Goal…Relevant & Realistic

 Goals must be aligned to iGovTT’s vision and

mission.
 Must be based on the current conditions and
realities of the environment.
 I.E within the availability of resources,
knowledge and time.
 NB – Irrelevant Goals -> iGovTT losses focus & Goals
are Ignored.
 Unrealistic Goals ->
 loss of team motivation
 Employees feel over burdened, overwhelmed &
stressed out
 Which leads to low productivity
SMART Goal…Time-Based / Time-
Bound
 Goals must have starting points,
ending points, and fixed durations.
 Deadline bolster employees
commitment to achieving the goal.
 Creates urgency.

NB Time must be measurable,

attainable and realistic.
SMART Goals
 Specific
 Well defined
 Clear to anyone that has a basic knowledge of the project
 Measurable
 Know if the goal is obtainable and how far away completion is
 Know when it has been achieved
 Agreed Upon /Attainable
 Agreement with all the stakeholders what the goals should be
 Realistic / Relevant
 Within the availability of resources, knowledge and time
 Time Based / Time-Bound
 Enough time to achieve the goal
 Not too much time, which can affect project performance

NB – SMART Goals = SMART iGovTT
