Traditional Backup
Storage Costs
JOERG HALLBAUER
Introduction
Many customers are asking about
backup to public cloud
Everyone assumes it would be cheaper
to store backup data in the public cloud
This presentation addresses the cost of
public cloud vs. private cloud and
traditional backup storage costs

Assumptions
Public cloud backups are represented by AWS S3 storage
Assumption: Glacier is only and acceptable medium for long term deep archive
that have almost no retrieval activity.
Costs for S3 storage are obtained from the AWS Simple Monthly
Calculator
http://calculator.s3.amazonaws.com/index.html
Costs for On-site private cloud backups are derived from the costs
to EVT customers for this type of storage.

Conclusions
There is no significant price difference between public cloud,
private object, and traditional backup storage.
In order to maintain price equivalence between all of the types of
storage studied, some kind of deduplication gateway device would
need to be placed in front of both the public and private object
storage, thus driving the cost up slightly.
We currently dont have cost information on these devices.
Note, this increases the complexity and the operational costs of object storage.
This also holds true for backups to S3 within AWS. An AMI of a deduplicating gateway
in front of S3 storage would still be needed to maintain cost parity.
The ability to provide a similar solution for Google is unclear at the moment.
Thank You!
