BIRTH OF CAR

In 1769 the first self-propelled car was

built by Nicolas Cugnot which could
attain speeds of upto 6 kms/hour.

In 1885 the first real car rolled down on to the streets.

The earlier attempts, though successful, were steam powered
road-vehicles.

5
ADVENT OF CARS IN INDIA

It was in 1898 that the first

motorcar rode down India’s
roads. From then till the First
World War, about 4,000 cars
were directly imported to India
from foreign manufacturers

In 1946 Premier Autobackmobile

(PAL) produced the first car in
India.

6
In the 50s, the Government of India granted
approval to only 7 car dealers to operate in
India.

Honda Wants To Be
Known For Safety
99 percent of the new Honda cars, SUVs and minivans
purchased last year earned 5-star ratings** for both the driver and
front seat passenger in NCAP frontal crash tests conducted by the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). That's a higher
percentage than any other brand.

bodies that more efficiently manage crash energy
should you be involved in a collision.

41
Honda’s Commitment to Safety

qAs a result of Honda's commitment to safety for

everyone, Honda models* feature the following
safety technologies as standard equipment—
regardless of size or price:
q
1)Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) -
Airbag protection that stops deployment of the front
passenger side airbag when it senses that a child or
small-statured adult in the front passenger seat is in
the airbag's path of deployment.

q
q
42
2) Side curtain airbags for every row
of every vehicle* - Cover the side
windows in a sufficiently severe
collision. Our light trucks have a
rollover sensor to deploy the side
curtain airbags in the unlikely event of
a rollover.

3) Advanced Compatibility
Engineering™ (ACE™) - Designed to
help minimize the collision force in the
event of a frontal impact with a vehicle
of a different size and weight by
spreading collision forces over a larger
area of the body and frame. This helps
to alleviate concentrated impact forces
that could cause or increase injury.

43
4) Pedestrian injury mitigation -
External features such as the hood,
fender and windshield wiper systems are
designed to help reduce pedestrian
injuries.

5) Anti-lock braking system (ABS) -

Technology that helps the driver maintain
steering control while braking.

6) Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®)

with Traction Control - Standard on all
Honda trucks. VSA and traction control
work together to help the driver retain
steering control by detecting and
correcting understeer or oversteer.
44
7) Honda brought a sophisticated
level of sporty handling and
active safety to affordable
passenger cars with independent
suspensions that help control body
movement in cornering and on
bumpy surfaces. We apply this know-
how to Honda and Acura light trucks
as well.

8) Rear Crush Zone — Engineered

to absorb and dissipate crash
energy.

9) 3-Point Seat Belts and Head

Restraints in every seating position.

10) Tire pressure Monitoring System 45

Leadership In Future Safety

oHonda engineers are developing

"pre-collision" safety technology
to support drivers' efforts to
prevent collisions before they
occur.

Millimeter wave radar technology

enables the Acura RL to alert the
driver to a potential collision. 46
